The Coffee Shop / The Most Time Spent Yet
« on: October 02, 2010, 02:11:42 pm »
Good Day All!

Well, I went to Harbor Freight today a picked up a drill press, it was on sale for $50 + I had a 20% off coupon. I got home and spent about 3 hours cutting, I made a call sign name plate, using Steve's program, and 3 key chains, using Steve's program.  Wish I could say they all came out great, but they didn't.  I am getting better though, and I am having fun.  The first one I did was the name plate, it came out so bad, I told my lady, that it's a scary Halloween name plate  ;D  The first key chain was a disaster, the second one came out better, the interior cuts were awesome, but the outline was a little wavy. The third one was all around better, and with some sanding it might be good enough to add a finish to it.  Then I spent some more time cutting out test patterns.  All in all it was a fun morning.

Good Evening Folks!

Just wanted to ask if my signature of the rolling train bothers you?  Should I remove it and add a static one?

General Scroll Saw Talk / Blade Change
« on: October 01, 2010, 06:56:05 pm »
Good Evening Folks!

I am sure I could probably find the answer to the question some where but thought I would ask.  Since the FD blades are such high quality, and I have not had my first one break yet.  How do you know when it's time to change out the blade?  I am currently using the #5-SR.  It's still cutting smoothly, but I am worried that it might break while cutting.  Any precautions to take?  Should I be worried about flying derbies?  On another note, I printed out a few copies of a practice pattern, that has various lines, curves, and shapes.

Thanks in advance,

Steven

Good Evening Folks!

I noticed there are a lot of cat people here, as am I.  One of my other hobbies is ham radio, we have a local store, and the owners love cats, in fact they have a few cats that roam the store.  They also have a page were customers can post pictures of their cats, also included is a set of pictures of the store cats. http://www.universal-radio.com/cats.html

General Scroll Saw Talk / Bent End
« on: September 27, 2010, 08:19:14 pm »
Good Day Folks!

Hope I am not wearing out my welcome with all my questions.  I just changed the blade for the first time, and noticed that the ends are bent, more so on the top end.  Is this normal?  It didn't seem to affect my cuts, that I know of, I have been having issues making turns, but I figured it was because I am just getting started, and I seem to be getting better.

Thanks in advance,

Steven

General Scroll Saw Talk / Disc and Belt Sander Opinion
« on: September 25, 2010, 10:53:21 pm »
Good Evening Folks!

I am looking for opinions/thoughts on an disc and belt sander.  I noticed the disc size is about the same, so that's not an issue.  The question I have, what would (in your opinion) be better for the hobby, the 1inch or the 4inch wide belt model?

Thanks in advance,

Steven

Good Day Folks!

Here is my 2nd attempt, it was a puzzle pattern, but decided just to make it has an outline.  This one will go to my boys, lady friend, they have a Dachshund. I am still having trouble making the turns, but I feel I am making progress.  I just used lemon oil for the finish.

Good Evening Folks

I was looking at some Cuban Mahogany, the description states it comes in thickness' of 4/4, 5/4, 8/4 and 12/4 how does that translate into inches?  Is there a conversion formula? See example below

Species                       Cut          Thickness     Width    Retail    100-300 bd. ft.    Over 300
Cuban Mahogany    Flat Sawn               4/4    6" - 11"    $21.00        $20.00              $19.00

Thanks is advance for answering another newbie question,

Steven

Good Evening Folks!

First of all, I want to say a big thanks to everyone that has taken the time to answer all my questions, you have been very helpful in getting me started on the right path in this wonderful and addicting hobby.

Well I made my first cut - It didn't turn out well at all.  Don't get me wrong, it did come out better than expected.  I have documented, my mistakes, and will learn from them. Ignore the touch up on the tail, I did that in MS Paint, the blade got a way from me.  Also, I used the cheap blade that came with the saw, for my next cut I will install one of the FD blades I purchased.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Animal Names Pattern
« on: September 18, 2010, 03:13:35 pm »
Good Day Folks!

I remember seeing some patterns, that spelled out the name of the animal, in the shape of the animal.  I can't seem to find it again.  The one I am looking for is the dachshund.  I think it was a collection of patterns, that you had to buy.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

The Coffee Shop / It Arrived
« on: September 10, 2010, 06:26:35 pm »
Good Day Folks!

My saw and stand arrived today  ;D But for some reason, the work light didn't show up, oh well ,I called Grizzly - and they said it will be here Monday. I didn't even get it in the door, and I already started building the stand.  I have to wait to the family gets home to help put the rest of it together.  I have to say that Grizzly is TOP notch. However, the box the stand came in, broke open, there is no real damage, just some scuff marks on the powder coating.  It was shipped UPS.

Hope everyone has a great weekend,

Steven

General Scroll Saw Talk / Basic Question
« on: September 08, 2010, 08:30:33 pm »
Good Day Folks!

As many of you know, I am new to the hobby. I just found a book called 50 Easy Weekend Scroll Saw Projects at 1/2 price books. I found a pattern I would like to try after I get some practice. On page 24 there is a train pattern, It has 3/8 TK on it, what is 3/8 TK? also it says Optional, add a cloth and mirror backing - what type of cloth are they talking about, also how would one add a mirror backing? How would one cut a custom mirror backing?

Thanks in advance,

Good Day Folks!

Well, I decided to take the plunge and get the Dewalt-DW788, I just ordered it from Grizzly.com. Can't wait for it to get here. I was going to get the Porter-Cable from Lowes, but AmazingKevin pointed out the sweet deal on the Dewalt. My lady is actually buying it for me, well 1/2 of it.

Thanks for listening,

Steve
