General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Wood Selection for Scrollsaw Patterns
« on: May 10, 2018, 07:31:21 am »
I use a lot of baltic birch plywood in 1/4 and 1/8 as it is strong and less prone to warping, pine and construction grade spruce is cheap, easy to cut but I find I have to be selective as knots can be a problem. Our area has several good sized lumber mills that produce pine and spruce. the annoying part is the real select wood is destined for export to other countries, I stay away from the MDF type as the fine dust does not enhance my COPD.

I have been using a lot of ash lately, expensive but beautiful grain but the best is walnut, maple, basswood is really my go to for handcarving and cuts good on the scroll saw. its all good and each species has unexpected challenges.

I am Norm from Nipawin Saskatchewan. I used an aquarium pump when the blower conked on my Dremel ; worked better than the original and much cheaper to buy than a new blower part. I just tapped it to the upper barrel of the saw used the water tube attached to the original blower tube

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: Top Feed Blade Ideas
« on: April 30, 2018, 11:37:46 am »
I am generally a bottom feeder. I just finished Steve's pattern "so far you have survived.......", stack cutting 3 -1/4 pieces of Ash plywood. I used a spiral #1 for most of the letter cut-outs. the blade is fragile and bit brittle and I had problems to thread from the bottom up so I used top feed , the blade was much easier to insert into the entry hole and if I had it centered over the table hole properly the blade would line up with the bottom clamp. Now it took some patience to clamp from the bottom but with a conscious effort I learned to feel my way and in time it became easier. After clamping I discovered that tension applied would line upper, lower and entry hole but the blade was often to loose so I developed the technique to tension, release and then re-tension would relieve this problem. I think I could eventually become adept at both methods.

There is over a 100 entry holes in this project so the biggest issue for me is to maintain concentration on what I am doing rather allow the mind to drift to something else. Maybe I took a little longer to complete the plaque but I am well pleased with the outcome.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Saw upgrade
« on: April 26, 2018, 08:57:14 am »
I bought a Dremal. brand new many years ago on the advice of the salesman that it was most up to date and best on the market at that time. A specially designed tool for operator ease. There was an era of frustration, with blade slippage, air blower problems and a start switch had a very short life span. The machine eventually gathered dust and took up valuable work space. After retirement I started to use the saw more, determined it was not going to beat me and I overcame a lot of the problems but reaching to the back of the saw to tension the blade and wishing the arm would lift became so annoying that I bought a used Dewalt 788 type 1 on internet to try out. Wow what a difference.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Whats Happened ?
« on: April 26, 2018, 08:37:39 am »
I check out this forum almost daily but  confess that I am mostly a looker. I am amazed at the work Steve puts in to keep it interesting with new patterns on a daily basis, review of various tools and methods to do things., Rapid Roger mentioned about the past sites being so active on any item. I will check that out as I am doing Steve's word pattern " you survived 100% of your worst days" experimenting with a spiral blade  to cut the letters. I find much less turning of the piece with a spiral blade but not really satisfied with the jagged cut they make.

Have a good day everyone

There has been many memorials, funerals and outpourings of messages from all over including our Prime-minister, Premier and President Trump. Of the 29 that were on the bus 16 have now perished, I think 7 have been released from hospital to recover at home, 2 remain on the critical and  4 are still serious condition. The "Go Fund Me " page was closed off at over 12 million dollars. The cause of the incident is still under investigation perhaps trying to discover why the Semi Trailer did not stop at the stop sign.

The incident really effects everyone in our community, there was 29 on the bus, 15 have now passed away, 12 are still in hospital and 3 or 4 are still on the critical list. Out pouring of support has been unreal, a go fund me page now touches on 6 Million dollars maybe more.

Our neck of the woods is deep into hockey play-offs from small kids teams to more advanced. the junior (20 and under) team from our community (Nipawin Hawks) was to begin the league champion series  against a neighbor town (Humboldt Broncos). The Broncos bus was in collision with a semi trailer. the 28 players and coaches on the bus suffered 14 fatalities and 14 critical injured. It is a sad time here. it appears the westbound semi truck did not stop at a stop sign and the northbound bus could not avoid the collision.

The Humboldt Broncos team over the years developed many National league players, some are in the hall of fame. The Humboldt community also have sent several athletes to the Olympics in other sports.
