General Scroll Saw Talk / DW788 owners or knowledge of please
« on: August 21, 2015, 11:50:27 am »
Hi all
I just got my grubby paws on this type 1 788 as pic1
now although its a great machine is it normal to have a lot of fuzzies as pic 2 (I;m thinking not)
up till now I have been using a delta Q3 and although its a quite harsh C arm machine I never have to sand anything except the back of really thin stuff like portraits.
Now I am using the same blade type same size and virtually the same speed and the same material
so whats wrong, is there an adjustment or something I'm missing
any help appreciated

General Scroll Saw Talk / NOT A GOOD DAY
« on: November 18, 2014, 11:40:48 am »
Well it started out OK, switched the heating on in the shop, came in the office printed the orders and made the patterns, went into the shop, to start a good day cutting, so far so good.
Then I started cutting the first plaque, and could here a tapping noise, stopped the machine and checked, and nothing be seen, so carried on.
The tapping suddenly became a mass vibrating knock, Yep she'd thrown a bearing on the linkage arm, and I did not have one.
So on the phone I get after stripping the saw down to track a replacement  after two hours I finally found a supplier that had stock.
So me and the wife set out on our 160 mile round trip to get a ?2 bearing, when I got there nice man said how many did you want Dave, how many have you got said I, nice man said I have 5 Dave, that is how many I want said I.
Wont be caught on that one again for a very long time
So it now looks by the amount of orders that have come in since this morning it's going to be a 12 hour cut tomorrow
oh well just another day at DT Crafts I suppose

And at least I got that off my chest
have a nice day

General Scroll Saw Talk / Electrical/electronic advise needed
« on: September 24, 2014, 01:39:23 pm »
Hi All
I need your thoughts
I have been using a Delta 650 Q3 now for some time, when I first got it I fast found out (from our members) that when you switch it on there is a time delay of about 2 seconds before the motor starts running, and this is the norm.
Now recently I have been experiencing a fault, in that some times when you flick the switch the motor attempts to run instantly, but only momentary and then stops, thus meaning that I then have to switch it off and then back on and usually it works fine. This problem has got worse over the past couple of weeks, so I stripped the machine and took the circuit board (and motor) to the local repair shop for him to investigate, his initial findings were that there was no failing components on the board. We then switch the motor on and off several times (in his workshop) until the fault showed itself. The conclusion was that he believed the fault was with the motor, in that one or more of the segments were failing or failed and when the motor stopped or came to rest on the segment, that this is when the problem would happen, so I thanked him brought it home.
Later as I thought that really logic does not prevail here ( and I may well be totally wrong) but
If there should be a time delay of 2 seconds before the board starts to feed the motor with power, and if on occasions the motor tries to start instantly, then this means that at times the motor is getting power to it at a time when it should not (if that makes sense) and if this being so how can it be the motor that is at fault.
I have asked the question to Delta, but still no reply, so if anyone has half an idea I would be grateful, xmas is not getting any further away and really need to get this sorted as orders are already increasing

The Coffee Shop / Attention Canada- Vera is here
« on: August 08, 2014, 11:06:07 am »
Yes I can confirm that the Canadian Air force last remaining Lancaster Bomber "V Vera" flew over my house about an hour ago and has now safely landed at RAF conningsby a few miles away.

Although a shame as the intention was for it to meet up with its UK sister and the rest of the Battle of Britain memorial flight, just off our coast , and then be escorted by the Red Arrows to do a fly past at Lincoln cathedral. Due to bad weather conditions that did not happen, oh well she's here for 6 weeks, so maybe tomorrow.
And what about that lucky git on board the canadian craft, a civilian who paid ?43.000 GBP to occupy the only spare seat for the duration of the tour-if only

General Scroll Saw Talk / Beating MDF Dust
« on: July 07, 2014, 12:12:50 pm »
Now
Some may have seen this, some may use it and others might like it.
For a long time now I have been constantly battling with mdf dust in the vac filters, for ever stopping to clean them (I cut a lot of MDF). I introduced a so called interceptor, although the one I added was designed as an attachment for cleaning fire grates, but thought well the is really fine dust in the grates so it may work, IT DIDN'T, so I went in search of the answer and eventually found it.
as can be seen on pic1 it is a small 5 gallon bucket with two inlet/outlets
pic 2 shows the internal pipe work, the long pipe is as supplied and extends down to around three inches from the bottom of the bucket, the only addition is a standard waste elbow bonded to the other pipe, once this is done and as pic 3 shows fill the bucket with around one inch of water, put the lid on connect everything up and start cutting ( of course ensuring you have first cleaned the vac filter) I cut for around an hour and then removed the lid and as can be seen from pic 4 all the fine dust is congealed in the water and the filters are as clean as when I started, job sorted, oh the reason for the elbow is simply to act as a baffle to stop any splashing water getting into the vac.
As said some may not like the idea but for me it's a God send

IS THIS GOOD ENOUGH
The subject is Emma Jayne, she died at a young age from a brain Tumour. Since her death her parents have relentlessly raised money in her name to support the Neuro-surgical unit at the Infirmary, so much so that they have just been awarded the BEM "British Empire Medal" for there efforts
So this is why it needs to be right, we intend to present her parents with the portrait at next months charity walk
as they do not know about this I have had to work with the website logo of which is only a thumb nail
any comments appreciated

The Coffee Shop / Another New beach- it must be spring
« on: April 26, 2014, 12:23:33 pm »
what's happening here is
The dredger in the first picture sits around a mile off shore during low tide, and dredges the sea bed, taking on sand
Then at high tide it comes in to shore (about 100 metres), just to the stern of the ship you can just make out a black line, it is in fact a three foot diameter rubber pipe which floats on the water. The ship hooks up to the pipe of which extends to the shore line where it then converts to a heavy metal pipe of the same diameter. The dredger then takes on water to create a slurry and pumps it's cargo to land, as can be seen from the other pics. The result being that the water drains away and leaves the sand on the beach, were it is then flattened and graded to create a gradient from the sea defences out wards to the foreshore.
WHY
Well the idea being that if you build up the height of the beach by removing the sand from further out then the tides don't come in as far
DOES IT WORK
I hope so my house is only 50 yards away from were the pics were taken :) :)
This happens every spring from easter onwards for about six weeks along a stretch of around 16 miles of shore line
and they on average pump around 1 million tons of sand during the operation
the one ironic part is that the dredger has to come all the way from the Arab Emirates each year (we don't appear to have one of our own)
just thought  that might be of interest to some
