Brag Forum / Train for Grandson
« on: January 08, 2015, 05:45:09 pm »

Train I made for my grandson Troy, turning 3 soon. He saw a picture of it in one of my woodworking mags and asked if I could make it for him. How could I say no.

I usually assemble the wood parts first, use a spray finish of your choice, then assemble the rest of the clock.

I use thick CA glue, it dries clear so you won't see it after you apply finish.

Nice work. Did you make that for a family or friend? I was a Hospital Corpsman and worked with some good Marines. Thanks for posting this.

I made this for my daughter to give to her brother in-law who is an active Marine.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: New to the Scroll Saw HELP

I prefer tight grain hardwoods like Maple or Cherry. They are harder to cut than some of the other common hardwoods but the results are good. Poplar is a good "starter" wood for the scroll saw, softer than Maple or Cherry but harder than pine. Not as pretty IMO. Balck Walnut works well on the scroll saw if you can get it and like dark wood. Baltic Birch plywood is also used often for scroll sawing. I have fould that pine is not the best for scroll sawing small stuff, breaks too easily.  It also depends on what you have available in your area. I'm from NY and harvest a lot of my own trees for lumber. Hopefully a forum member from your area will chime in.
