Clover Basket
« on: March 20, 2020, 09:49:21 pm »
Another question on the Clover Basket http://www.stevedgood.com/sawbasket.pdf, AKA "Stacked Ring Basket".

I'm not seeing any marks that designate starter holes in the rings to begin my cuts.  Usually there's instructions on the pattern for small entry holes for a starting place, such as this stacked basket http://www.stevedgood.com/2018stackedbasket.pdf.

I can pick any spot and figure it out, I'm sure, but I was just afraid I was missing something.  Anyone else done this pattern and just "dive in" :D  or is there some other step I'm not seeing?

Thanks.

You can pick any spot you want but try and use the smallest drill that the blade can use.

I usually pick it at a point.  You usually have to do a little sanding so it is not noticeable.

Another technique I use is to cut across the  wood in the direction of the grain and then glue back together with a little CA.

There is a video of making a basket at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXW-FfxCXiA

Follow the link to get the pattern and you can see the lines at the bottom were you cut an glue back together.

There is book by Monroe Dutcher on making baskets and he uses same technique.

PS:   I made about a dozen of these baskets as they are great hostess gifts.

That had crossed my mind, Don, too.  Many thanks for all your helpful advice and suggestions.  Now I can get started.  :)
