Almost wish I hadn't read what it takes to go up the ranks here... I'll be a "Newbie" forever!  0 days, 14 hrs and 52 minutes.  That's what I get for being a lurker, I guess.  Oh well, it's a great site with great people.  What more can one ask???

My thanks to all of you for making me feel better.  When I dropped that "masterpiece" and parts went flying, I thought I screwed up royally, that no one else would do such a dumb thing.  But now I see it's just another event in the life of a scrollsawer, and a learning experience at that.  BTW, I had to cut out a new "e", and after I glued it on I took another look... I had glued it on backward!  Thank God the glue hadn't set yet.

And he took out your planer too??  Just how does anyone destroy a scrollsaw "adjusting" it?

I've got two sons & 11 grands.  Never locked up my shop, never worried about anything getting damaged.  They know the rules and the consequences if they don't follow them.  I've taught most of them how to use the tools and how to respect them, just like my Dad did for me.  God help me if I'd have lost or broken one of HIS tools!!! LOL

I once had a job at Honeywell as a Calibration Tech.  What this really meant was that I filed very small wires to change the electrical resistance.  We had Precision Calibrators in the lab with me, and the joke was that they had been there so long their files got dull.  That's what made them "precise".

Is this happening to those of you who wait until the blade gets dull?  Makes your cuts more precise??  LOL.

Sure wish there was something in the Seattle area.  I've looked, but haven't found anything.  So far, this board is the best thing I've found for learning about scrolling.  Big thanks to Steve and all the folks here!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Ooops!
« on: May 19, 2010, 11:51:57 am »
Well, I finally did my first real project.  Used Steve's pattern for "I Love My Schnauzer", and it came out pretty good if I must say so myself.  Wife loved it.  Then I started hand sanding it a bit, holding it in one hand.  It was then that I dropped it onto the garage floor and the "e" and "r" went flying.  Can't say here what I really said but it wasn't nice.  I've since made a new e and r and got them attached but I've learned a lesson.  I'm sure none of the rest of you have ever done a big Ooops, have you?  ;)

I had the same problem with my DW788 until I looked under the table and saw bolts fastening the table to the brackets.  Loosened bolts, slid it over, and retightened.  Problem solved.

I was cleaning out some old tools I had in the garage, one of which was an old PowerKraft scroll (jig?) saw.  Had a small sanding disk on the side, but the whole thing was falling apart.  I tossed it and started looking for a replacement which I just had to have, never mind that I hadn't used the PowerKraft for 30 years!  Bought a scroll saw at Lowe's for $140 that vibrated so much I had to chase it, took it back and tried two different low end units, and finally ended up buying the DW788 many people recommended.  Haven't done a lot of projects so far, mostly made sawdust learning how to scroll and using the internet for my knowledge base.  I'm enjoying what I've done and hope to get into some "real" scrolling soon, want to make gifts for grands and great grands!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Do you use a magnifier/light combo?
« on: May 06, 2010, 11:57:28 pm »
I have both the light that I bought with my DeWalt 788, and then added a magnifier/flourescent light (22w.) that I got from Staples for about $65.  Its made well, mostly metal, but I have a problem with it swinging away because the head is heavy and hanging out quite far from the mount.  I've tightened everything as much as I can.  BTW, the mount is a clamp-on.  I might look into the type worn on the head.  Being 74 and a diabetic who's had some eye surgeries, I need all the help I can get!

I'm like some of you other "Newbies" and don't have anything I'd be comfortable showing.  I've only made one item so far, and that is just my dog's name, "Molly".  Other than that I've just made lots of sawdust getting to know my saw and how to use it.  Never did scrolling before, but believe I'm going to enjoy it.  Good to be among so many folks, both old hands and new who share as you do.

Like others here, I also bought the Hitachi CW40 at Lowes, but found it to vibrate way too much.  Took it back, got the Porter Cable replacement, but had the same problem.  Finally bought the DeWalt 788 and couldn't be happier.  Quiet, little vibration, easy blade changes, etc.

Just thought I'd throw my hat in the ring with the rest of you.  I'm new to scrolling, and really haven't done much as yet other than buy the DeWalt 788, blades, and other tools to get ready.  I'm an avid reader of Steve's emails and really appreciate all the You Tube video "How To's" from him.  I'll probably be asking lots of questions soon.  Steve, thanks for all you do.

Ask Steve a question. / Re: Scrollsaw Stand
« on: April 19, 2010, 04:49:32 pm »
Jared, I'm also a "Newbie" who recently bought the DeWalt 788.  I mounted it on the three legged stand made for it.  It's solid, and I can move it around easily enough just picking it up.  I tried a different arrangement using locking wheels, but there was too much movement in the axles, etc. of the wheels even when locked.  I'm happy with what I have.
