General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Ads on Steve's blog
« on: August 19, 2014, 01:06:57 pm »
I also agree with the above posts.  The ads don't bother me, and if it hadn't been for Steve's hard work and generosity I wouldn't know how to scroll saw, nor would I have many of the patterns I have today.  Sheila said she might be sounding a bit crabby about this, but that's OK.  I'm a crabby boater that's not crabbing about a few ads.  Keep it up Steve!

I like the idea of showing where we are.  Might even help some of us to find a scrolling buddy nearby.

Well, GB, we were both born in '36.  Me on a farm in Nebraska.  Doc come to our home for my birth, and later sent a bill to cover everything, including Mom's visits to him beforehand...$26.00!  I remember all on the list including the margarine kneading, no electricity, crank telephone on the wall, the outhouse. We also had a wood stove for heat and another "range" in kitchen that burned wood or coal for cooking and baking.  And here's one I haven't seen mentioned:  an ice box.  My favorite as a kid was cranking the old ice cream freezer until the contents got so stiff I couldn't turn the handle any more. Best ice cream ever!

Lots of great memories, but I'm happy I don't have to do many of those things any more.

I had the same problem waith my 17" Toshiba laptop.  Found out that the wiring in the hinge was intermittent.  If I held the screen at just a certain angle it would work but any movement and it went out.  Considering the cost of repairs I could either buy a new unit, or connect an external monitor to the laptop and lose the portability.

I decided to keep the unit plugged into an external monitor, using it as a desk unit, and bought a new Toshiba 17" laptop configured with Windows 7.  At age 78 I really didn't want to be learning a whole new language.  Love the new unit!

Danny, this seems to be too late, but I Googled the Philips fcl 22w bulb tonight and it showed it to be in stock at Home Depot for $9.42.  BTW, it can be had in either cool white or Daylight white.  Don't know which you had, but it does make a difference.

I have that HF unit, and don't have any trouble keeping the lens cover up.  I just push a bit harder when I open it, and there is sort of a click, allowing it to open a bit further and to stay open.  I just looked at mine, and there is a small molded bar that causes that first stop, and when I push harder that goes under the plastic stop from above.  If you have that bar, and it's too high to go under, then try sanding it down a bit so it can.

Also, I had difficulty gripping the short tab at the front of the cover to open it, so I just put a piece of clear tape on it, going from the back, making a "U", and then fastened to the front of the existing tab.  It's longer than needed, so it leaves about 1/2" above the tab.  Strong enough and easy to grip.

Maybe yours is different, but this works great for me.

The Coffee Shop / Re: To Steve Good----The new look

I like the new look just fine as well, and really appreciate the site and all that Steve does and has done, day after day.  If it hadn't been for him, I would never have learned to scroll saw, never would have had that enjoyment.  Thanks Steve!!

I haven't been on much lately because my computer went south and buying a new one meant changing to windows 8.1.  I tried and tried, but it was like having to learn Japanese.  Don't know if I'm too old or just stubborn, but I finally gave up and had Toshiba make one for me with Windows 7...Love it and I'm back.

Re the light/magnifier, I got one from HF a couple years ago and really like it.  They sell two different ones, and I got the one with the flip up cover for the magnifier.  It was a couple bucks more, but a better light and the flip cover keeps the dust off the magnifier when I'm not using it.  No problem with vibration.

OK, have to throw in my two cents here!  I'm 78 and have four dead man switches... two are from Harbor Freight and I've never had a problem with them.  Good price, good switches..

Both my wife and I have each received call like this over the past few months.  You're right that it is a scam, so don't let them into your computer.  Good call Mike!

The Coffee Shop / Re: Costco Store

I'm fortunate enough to have two Costco stores within 6 miles of me, and I love the stores.  Not only for their pricing, but also for the warranty and return policies.  I've never been refused a refund, nor asked why other than was it defective.  About 8 years ago I bought an engagement ring for my fiance and she wore it for nearly six months before we broke up.  I still had the box and took it back to Costco.  No problem, full refund!  My motto is "If Costco doesn't have it, I don't need it."

The Coffee Shop / The New Will
« on: February 09, 2014, 01:12:23 am »
A man was telling his buddy "You won't believe what happened last night.
My daughter walked into the living room and said, "Dad, cancel my allowance immediately, forget my college tuition loan, rent my room out, throw all my clothes out the window, take my TV and my laptop. Please take any of my jewelry to the Salvation Army or Cash Converters. Then, sell my car, take my front door key away from me and throw me out of the house. Then, disown me and never talk to me again. Don't forget to write me out of your will and leave my share to any charity you choose."

"Holy Smokes," replied the friend, "she actually said that?"

"Well, she didn't put it quite like that. She actually said,
'Dad, meet my new boyfriend-- Mohammed. We're going to work together on Hillary's election campaign!'"
