A Cowboy's Guide to Life

Don't interfere with something that ain't botherin' you none.

Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance.

The easiest way to eat crow is while it's still warm.
The colder it gets, the harder it is to swaller.

If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin'.

If it don't seem like it's worth the effort, it probably ain't.

The biggest troublemaker you'll probably ever have to deal with
watches you shave his face in the  mirror every morning.

Never ask a barber if you need a haircut.

If you get to thinkin' you're a person of some influence,
try orderin' somebody else's dog around.

Don't worry about bitin' off more'n you can chew;
your mouth is probably a whole lot bigger'n you think.

Generally, you ain't learnin' nothing when your mouth's a-jawin'.

If you're ridin' ahead of the herd, take a look back every now
and then to make sure it's still there with ya.

Good judgment comes from experience,
and a lotta that comes from bad judgment.

Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier
than puttin' it back.

The quickest way to double your money is to fold it over
and put it back into your pocket.

Never miss a good chance to shut up.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Darken BLO?
« on: June 01, 2011, 08:18:47 pm »
I just finished a piece, cut from poplar, then applied a 50/50 mix of BLO and mineral spirits.  It came out very light and I would like to darken it, maybe using another stain on top of the one I just applied.  Can this be done?  Any ideas?

The Coffee Shop / Sold My 788
« on: March 08, 2011, 12:52:58 pm »
I sold my DeWalt 788 the other day, only because I also had an RBI Ultra 220vs that I liked and couldn't justify having two scroll saws.  The odd thing is how I felt when the buyer took it.  He didn't really know anything about scroll sawing, and seemed disinterested when I told him about this board and offered him a book on scroll sawing (free).  He loaded it up in the back of his pickup, and didn't bother to cover it even though there was a drizzling rain.  I know, I got the full price I was asking so shouldn't be bothered by this, but I really was hoping the buyer would be someone enthusiastic about scrollsaw projects, and who would take care of his equipment.  So why do I care?

I really do like the 220vs, except that it's a bottom feed only, but I'm getting used to that.  I just hope I can continue to get parts for it if I need them.  But then, I only paid $299 for it, brand new and still in the box.  Sold the 788 for more than that.

General Scroll Saw Talk / RBI Ultra 220 vs DW788
« on: December 23, 2010, 11:55:56 am »
I had visions of something "better" myself, so when I saw a brand new Ultra 220vs (2004 model) for sale on Craigslist for $399, I bought it.  I have it setting side by side with my 788, and do like the Ultra.  Termite is right, changing blades in the RBI isn't as simple as with the DW, but I do like the consistency of setting the tension.  It's smooth, but not a lot better than the 788.

What I don't like about it is that it's hard to bottom feed because the arm doesn't raise as high as the DW.  The arm does stay up, but I have the EZ Lift on the DW and that works well for me.  My other negative is that the blade holders will not accept sanding strips.  Bottom clamp is essentially a small hole for the blade.  However, the clamps do work very well, even better than the DW clamps in my humble opinion.

In summary, I may be putting the "new" Ultra back on the market.  Anyone else have opinions on this?

General Scroll Saw Talk / 2004 Hawk Ultra - Variable Speed?
« on: December 07, 2010, 10:43:04 am »
I have the opportunity to buy a Hawk 220 Ultra brand new in an unopened box for $400. But don't know if it's variable speed.  It was bought in 2004 as a gift for a persons father, who passed away before ever using it.  Here's what the seller said in an email:

"I don't think this 220 HAWK Ultra Scroll Saw is variable speed. I think it would have had a 'VS' in the name. It does come with a video. I'm guessing the manual is in the box. However, I don't really want to open the box.

It was purchased by my parents in 2004. The invoice total which included some kind of Kit valued at $135, came to $1,253.48."

Anyone know if it would be a VS??  Sounds like a great buy, but I have a DW788 that I'd sell, and like to vary the speed.  Thoughts??

This is an ad from the Seattle Craigslist, thought maybe someone would be interested.  I spoke to "Lisa", who said her dad bought everything in '97 to make upscale dollhouses, but didn't use it much at all.  Told me the saw was an RBI Hawk Ultra, and that the 25 boxes of hardwoods still had the labels, were about 24" long, 3 - 4" wide.

I'd love to have a Hawk, but I don't really have a use for the narrower hardwoods, which are of various dimensions.  Maybe one of you do?  Or am I passing up a good deal myself?

General Scroll Saw Talk / Telesight Headband Magnifiers
« on: November 03, 2010, 11:51:30 pm »
I had great customer service from Telesight this week and wanted to share it with the rest of you.

About 5 months ago I bought a headband magnifier from them and really liked using it. Fits right over my glasses and rotates up out of my way when I don't want it.  Sunday I dropped it on my cement floor and ruined the 2.5 lense.  I'm kinda blind without it, so I sent them an email right away asking if I could buy a replacement lense, and if so, how much?  The next morning I got a reply from William there, saying he was putting one in the mail immediately, at no charge.  I received it tonight.  I'm posting the web address for the unit I bought in case anyone else is interested.  I'm blown away to get such great customer service!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Can I stain or use "BLO" before glueing?
« on: November 03, 2010, 01:18:58 am »
It would be a lot easier to apply boiled linseed oil or water based stains before I glue a vertical scroll work to a base, but I suspect the glue wouldn't hold.  Any suggestions?

General Scroll Saw Talk / EZ Lift Update
« on: October 22, 2010, 12:49:46 am »
I ordered the EZ Lift directly from Jim Dandy after making a number of phone calls with no answer.. not even an answering machine.  I did this because the only other way to order from them was to send an email, and I didn't want to put my Visa info in an email.

I received and installed it, and do like the EZ Lift.  Glad I got it, and I've thrown that block of wood away that I used to use to hold up the arm.

There was a small problem with my order, however, and I made several more calls over a three day period at various times, all with no answer, no machine.  I finally did get an answer, and my small issue was resolved.

I confess that I'm a bit bewildered by this.  How a business can publish two phone numbers and not answer either of them except occasionally, and yet have a fine product that many folks probably want and need.  Anyway, I just wanted to give a heads up for those who might want to order direct.
