General Scroll Saw Talk / Staining Advice
« on: July 07, 2012, 08:50:01 pm »
I've made some projects from red oak, then applied Watco (oil based) golden oak stain, finally finishing with multiple coats of Deft Clear spray.  On some of these, the stain seems to soak into the wider grains of the oak, going fairly dark.  Is there some sort of "pre-stain" I could use to prevent that?  I have some water based prestain but don't think it's the thing to use because I'd be mixing water and oil based solutions, and the water based will raise the grain.

Any ideas?

General Scroll Saw Talk / Recommendations for a band saw
« on: April 02, 2012, 02:30:28 pm »
I've been considering buying a band saw for my shop and selling my old Grizzly table saw to make room for it.  Hardly ever use the table saw anyway.  Thought I'd use a band saw for cutting thicker wood toys, some resawing, etc.  It would have to work on 120 Volts.  But I have never used a band saw and really don't know what to look for. What size, brand, options etc.  Suggestions?  Recommendations?  Or am I nuts for thinking about this?

The Coffee Shop / The Drunk
« on: March 19, 2012, 01:47:58 pm »
A drunk gets up from the bar and heads for the bathroom. A few minutes later, a loud, bloodcurdling scream is heard coming from the bathroom. A few minutes later, another loud scream reverberates through the bar. The bartender goes into the bathroom to investigate what the drunk is screaming about.

"What's all the screaming about in there? You're scaring my customers!"

"I'm just sitting here on the toilet and every time I try to flush, something comes up and squeezes the hell out of my b@lls!"

With that, the bartender opens the door, looks in and says, "You idiot! You're sitting on the mop bucket!!!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Blade Storage?
« on: March 13, 2012, 10:27:22 pm »
While in Harbor Freight today I picked up a plastic box I thought some of you might be interested in for blade storage.  It has eight compartments, each long enough for a 5" blade. Has a locking transparent top and carrying handle, all for under $5.00.  Here's the link:

General Scroll Saw Talk / New Delta Scroll Saw
« on: January 16, 2012, 02:17:23 pm »
Looks like Delta is retiring the 40-690 saw, which is probably the reason for the sale prices right now.  The new saw will be the 40-695, but I haven't seen a price for it as yet.  You can check it out at: http://www.deltamachinery.com/products/scroll-saws/item/40-695?category_id=48

It does have an arm that locks up when raised.  That's one improvement.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Lasko & Galaxy 20" fan recall
« on: January 15, 2012, 12:39:38 am »
I looked up the Lasko 3733 fan tonight to price it, and see that in March of 2011 a recall was issued for both the Lasko and Galaxy fans that were sold in 2005 and before.  Just thought I'd let anyone who has one of these older units that there is a fire danger.  The fix is fused outlet Lasko will send to anyone owning one of these.  Just Goggle Lasko 3733 box fan and you'll see the notices.

It seems the newer ones have the fused cord, so their safe.

The Coffee Shop / Holiday Drinking, Driving
« on: December 19, 2011, 10:39:07 pm »
Friends,

I would like to share an experience with you about drinking and driving. As you well know, some of us have been known to have had brushes with the authorities on our way home from the odd social session over the years.

Well, I have done something about it: a couple of nights ago I was out for a few drinks with some pals and had a few too many whiskeys as well as beers and some rather nice Merlot; but knowing full well I may have been slightly over the limit, I did something I've never done before - I took a bus home.

I arrived back safely and without incident which was a real surprise, since I had never driven a bus before and have no idea where I got this one.

The Coffee Shop / Russ and Sam
« on: November 03, 2011, 06:42:15 pm »
Russ and Sam, two friends, meet in the park every day to feed the pigeons, watch the squirrels and discuss world problems.

One day Russ didn't show up. Sam didn't think much about it and figured maybe he had a cold or something.. But after Russ hadn't shown up for a week or so, Sam really got worried. However, since the only time they ever got together was at the park, Sam didn't know where Russ lived, so he was unable to find out what had happened to him.

A month had passed, and Sam figured he had seen the last of Russ, but one day, Sam approached the park and.. lo and behold!.. there sat Russ!  Sam was very excited and happy to see him and told him so.  Then he said, 'For crying out loud Russ, what in the world happened to you?'

Russ replied, 'I have been in jail.'

'Jail!' cried Sam. What in the world for?'

'Well,' Russ said, 'you know Sue, that cute little blonde waitress at the coffee shop where I sometimes go?'

'Yeah,' said Sam, 'I remember her. What about her?

'Well, one day she filed rape charges against me; and, at 89 years old, I was so proud that when I got into court, I pleaded 'guilty'.

'The judge gave me 30 days for perjury.'

General Scroll Saw Talk / Tung Oil Finish - Need to Clear Coat?
« on: October 18, 2011, 01:21:39 pm »
I just finished two baskets with Formby's Tung Oil, but now wonder if I should spray a clear coat over this, or can it be left as-is?  It's doubtful that they will be used for food, but maybe apples, oranges, etc.

General Scroll Saw Talk / 3M 77, Duro?
« on: September 12, 2011, 07:23:10 pm »
I've used Duro for attaching patterns since I started scrolling, but now can't find it at Lowe's or Home Depot.  I know a number of you use 3M #77, but what I'm finding is Super 77 and it doesn't show it to be repositional.  Is this the same stuff you use?  Or what else would you recommend?  Thanks..

General Scroll Saw Talk / Staining Poplar
« on: July 22, 2011, 11:50:30 pm »
I just read an article in Wood Magazine about a good way to stain poplar.  They recommended using gel stain, which is a very thick stain that needs to be rubbed on.  No sealer needed, and it hides the greenish colors often found in poplar, yet lets the grain show through.  Have any of you tried this?  If so, did it work for you?

General Scroll Saw Talk / Donating My Work?
« on: June 16, 2011, 11:44:18 pm »
I made a desk cutting from oak, two lines that said "God, grant me serenity".  I donated it to an auction for an Alanon fund raiser, not knowing if anyone would want it and it brought multiple bids, finally going for $25.  Made me feel good that someone appreciated what I'd done.  (My first sale too, Dan)

But now I've had inquiries about doing more.  I've never intended selling any of my work, just giving it to family and friends.  Selling seemed too much like going back to work, and I just want the enjoyment.  So if I do "take orders" I thought about doing it as a charitable donation to either my church, or Alanon.  To do this, I thought maybe having them write a check to me for whatever amount they felt the value to be, and I in turn could donate the money to the church.  I get the tax benefit, they get the product.

So here's the question:  Am I nuts?  Is there a better way to do this?  What would you folks recommend?

The Coffee Shop / The Speeder
« on: June 08, 2011, 07:53:20 pm »
A police officer in a small town stopped a motorist who was speeding
down Main Street.

"But officer," the man began, "I can explain."

"Just be quiet," snapped the officer  "I'm going to let you cool
your heels in jail until the chief gets back."

"But, officer, I just wanted to say......"

"And I said to keep quiet!  You're going to jail!"

A few hours later the officer looked in on his prisoner and said,
"Lucky for you that the chief's at his daughter's wedding. . .He'll
be in a good mood when he gets back."

"Don't count on it." answered the fellow in the cell  "I'm the
groom."
