Hobbies treadle saws
« on: July 15, 2013, 06:54:05 pm »
I had a couple of old treadle fret saws given last Saturday and have made a start on restoring one. (The one on the right) When I say restoring, I mean bringing back to working condition, not factory condition, the paintwork certainly won't win any concours prizes. :) I think the saw is about 100 years old.

I like the paint job and how you matched it to your bike in the background. You really have a couple of nice old saws. Glade to see someone preserving history. Thanks for giving us a look in the past.

Dave, I've seen some go recently for between 20 and 30 quid. There's a Hobbies Gem on Ebay at the moment, in Hertfordshire, starting price of ?25

Mickey, you would be surprised at how different the colours are. The bike is orange, the saw pulleys are bright red. Must be the overhead striplight that caused the illusion. :)

Martin.

Mark's Handbook for Mechanical Engineers says a man can produce about 0.1 HP continuously for an 8 hour day. That's equal to about 75 watts, or a motor current draw of 0.625 Amp at 120V. Most of the saws on the market today claim about 1.3 amp draw, so they are about twice the output of a man.

You need another set of treadles on that beast. ;D Maybe the wife can help.
