General Scroll Saw Talk / PLEASE HELP with mao shan scroll saw
« on: August 17, 2014, 11:36:18 am »
so I've been using a crappy old mastercraft pin end scroll saw for years now. my cousin had this mao shan pinless scroll saw sitting in the corner of his shop for years that he had only used a couple times so he thought it would have a better home in my shop !!! whoooo hooooo....I looked up this scroll saw name and it appears a pretty good name that has made products for grizzly and a few other companies in the past...anyways....my problem is in the pinless blades and the clamps ...no matter what I do I cannot get the blades tight enough in the clamps to hold them...even when I take a pair of plyers to hold the clamp then reef on it with an alan key to tighten it it still wont tighten enough to hold the blades.....there must be something i'm doing wrong here..but I just can't figure it out...I was sooo excited to get this good heavy duty saw and I just am dying to start using it..but I need to get past this issue first lol...the saw itself is like 10 times the weight of my mastercraft and very well built of out cast iron! here is a few pics of it and the clamps that I just can't get tight enough.....please please help guys !! lol...

another option you can go with is to convert your file into a pdf . and if you have the newest version of adobe acrobat reader (always a free program) then in your print settings when you print your file you can print in poster size and enlarge it by precentages...there is also a view of it to show how many pages your picture will print out on so you can adjust accordingly. it may take a couple trys printing to get the exact size you want but it works great.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Gluing fret work to backer
« on: May 22, 2014, 02:16:03 pm »
a trick I learned from a friend in K.C. Mo. wax paper spread glue on it as thin as possible with a plastic card an old credit card works well, get it thin as possible then put fret work on it then on backer works well and little to no squeeze out

I would really really like to THANK YOU for this tip...i've always used small dabs of glue or try to spread it on the back of my fret piece with a sponge brush or tooth pick and have always gotten squeeze out and it take forever to apply to the piece and by the time i finish i have to go back over the piece real quick because the first area i did would start to dry up...the squeeze out is something i've always just delt with but with a painted backer board i really find it a huge PITA because the painted backer board shows like a grease spot once the glue squeeze out is removed and finish is applied....i used this method the other day spreading the glue with a small foam roller that had a little bottle attached to it that i just filled with my gorilla glue. once i spent a whole 79 seconds to spread the glue on the wax paper and put the fret work piece on lol..after applying the fret to the backer board i had very little to no squeeze out......your little tip has made this part of the job sooo much easier for me !!!!!! clean up was a breeze, simply throw away the wax paper and rinse the foam roller, put the cap on the little bottle that came with it and then your all ready for the next time !!

thanks dave !!! i greatly appreciate your help...with you quick instructions i was able to do what i was wanting to do without having to spend weeks upon weeks trying to figure out these couple programs !!
here is a quick shot of what i did..i still have to get the proper font that you mentioned but i was just trying to test it out real quickly. only problem i really have to over come now is to stretch it out bigger and then save it again so when i print it i can explode it more to print about 18 inches wide by about 12 high....i used gimp to erase the writing, my wife took it then over to her adobe photoshop and combined the 2 pages to one image , then i took it back to inkscape to input the new writing..now i'm sure there is one helluva lot easier to do it then i did but hey at least i'm learning...my wife said she can more then likely take and do whatever i wanted in her photoshop in about less then the quarter the time it took me lol

Thanks for that suggestion spirithorse..I will try downloading and see what I can do...

in the meantime if anyone would like to try their hand at changing the "welcome" in the sign I posted to reflect " The Strey's"   and trying to keep that same flowy font that would be awesome and I would be greatly appreciative !!!

thanks everyone. I really like this site and glad that I decided to post for help as everyone is so helpful around here !!

Hello again everyone,

i'm looking to make a couple outdoor name plaques for some friends of mine. i really like this pattern that steve posted : http://www.stevedgood.com/newwelcomesign.pdf

however i would like to change the "welcome" to someone's last name. can i get your guys and gals recommendations on the best way to do this please.

would i just find a font that i like and print it off and set it ontop of steve's pattern and try to match them up together as best i can? or is there a program that i can upload his design into and change the pattern to show the name i am looking at inserting? it would be nice to have some kind of program or pattern that is kind of generic that you can change the names for different people...is this possible at all?

justsomeguy,

I apologize up front for correcting, but shellac also melts into the previous coat as lacquer does.  That's why you don't have to sand between coats on either.  Other finishes like polyurethane do not meld into the previous coat.

it's always good to be corrected !!!! thanks ! :)

I just wanted to give an update ...i found a great product. it's by rustoleum. spray can called painters touch outdoor clear semi-gloss. i tested it out on a piece i made awhile back and boy o boy it worked awesome ! the silky smooth finish it gave me in 2 quick coats would normally take me 4 or 5 coats of lacquer with sanding with 400 & 600 grit in between! it worked so good i'm contemplating using it with some indoor pieces instead of using lacquer ! only real difference is that it doesn't melt into the previous coat like lacquer does. it sits on top of the previous coat like a shellac would.

anyone use this stuff before? i'm wondering what the long term effects would be and wether it would be beneficial using this instead of lacquer like i usually do?
