I made a BB fretwork 1/4" and Im wondering about useing box tape to seal the back of the project to keep out the BLO . Soak it, let it dry, then microwave to remove the tape, clear spray it, and glue fabric to the back of the fretwork on the bare wood.
any suggestions?

I don't go thru all that!
Dip in BLO mix, dry thoroughly, apply satin lacquer to the face (several coats), hit the back with a spray of Alene's Tacky spray adhesive (Brown can not the purple) and spread on the felt. I have not had a piece fall off the felt yet!
I did have one piece that I decided to redo and tried to strip the felt off the back and it was a bit@# to scrape it off!

I use hot glue to stick felt to the project.
Gluing over the oil might be structurally less strong, but there aren't a lot of forces trying to seperate them once you hang it on the wall.

Like GB said, "Alene's Tacky spray adhesive (Brown can not the purple)" will hold it and you won't have to go through all the extra steps. 8)

I use 3M77, to glue my fabric to the back of a portrait. Edward

When you spray the back, don't you get a lot of overspray on the sides and cut outs?

Just 'spry' it don't PAINT it....
I hold the can about 8 - 9 inches away and spray with a 'sweeping motion' but STRAIGHT on.
A little will hold the fabric and if you add a chip board backer it is fine.

Thanks GB, not done it yet, but will need to when mum's portrait is finished, it's half done, but waiting for the FD 2/0 spiral blades from Mike to arrive to do the finer cuts.

Thanks for the info. I guess I could just use the same spray glue as I use to put patterns on?
