The one from Harbor Freight is good for ocasional use. If you are going to use it allot you will need one heavier duty. A Dewalt, Sears etc. I agree about checking the local Craigslist.   Craiglook will search Craigslist within 250 miles.  8)

I agree with Russ , if you know someone that owns a Grizzly that you can use that is the 15" model  . I was going to buy a another planer { I already ownwed a Delta 12" } which will not handle the hard woods well . I used a friends 15" Grizzly and I was hooked and brought it and am very -very pleased with it ........food for thought ..........Marshall

Depending where in the Mid-West you're located ... you might also want to check with the local schools (middle, high, colleges) to see if they're selling.  Another source would be government sales.  State of Indiana sells a lot too.

Hope this helps.

I have an older Delta 12 1/2" and it works great.  You do have to take shallow cuts in hard wood, but the finish is excellent.

Ditto on the idea of tracking craigslist.  I was lucky enough to find a nearly new powermatic 15 inch with a helical head (not the byrd shelix) for only $600 recently.  It really does a great job with almost indiscernible snipe.  I also walked away with a huge load of hardwood for next to nothing.

The Lowes home center in my area had a Porter Cable 12 1/2 in. on sale for $219.99.  I own the same on and I am very happy with it.  You might check that out in your area!
