Simple scroll saw patterns
« on: November 13, 2013, 11:49:38 am »
I am looking for some simple scroll saw patterns for a beginner. Hopefully something other than kids puzzles. Maybe something of a simple geometric design?

If you want to try a portrait, this is about the simplest one I've done but it makes a very recognizable image. See what you think. I cut mine in 1/4" BB Ply. It is on a 5x7 blank so you won't waste much if it goes south. Leave the text till last - or leave it off. It is the hardest part.

Thanks for the help guys. I am doing some of the geometric shapes now, and think I am ready to go to something SLIGHTLY more intricate, but I am nowhere near ready to do portraits yet.

Don't be intimidated by portraits, take it one cut at a time.

Dustin hit the nail on the head.
Just guide the line into the blade and take your time and you will be amazed at what you can do.
A hint....Curved lines are easier and a lot more fun to cut than straight lines. No kidding, it is not all that hard, it just takes time to cut what "look" to be very difficult patterns.
Relax, breathe, make sawdust and enjoy your time hunched over the noise maker.  :D :D :D

PS. Al W had a very good suggestion too. Check out Steve Good's main blog, he not only has hundreds of patterns but he has a bunch of videos and teaching aids also.

Like the guys said, don't be intimated by portraits. Most of the time once you take the pattern off it won't matter if you were on the lines or not. (Eyes and letters are about the only exceptions)
