Pattern Requests. / Need help with word art for my son.
« on: May 30, 2013, 01:20:59 am »
My son Sean is graduating on the 15 th with his masters degree in psychology. He will need a name for his desk.  I would like to surprise him with a hand crafted sign.

I need some suggestions or patterns for his name but I'd like something unique not just a long continuous name, I can do that. I am having a mental block on this one.

Do you have some suggestions for me please?

SEAN MICKELSON is the name.   I'd appreciate any help! I need to ship this to him within a week.

Thanks in advance...

The Coffee Shop / Bag Pipes...Touching story...
« on: March 24, 2012, 10:35:46 am »
A story from a bagpiper about a homeless man's funeral.

As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery in the Kentucky back country.

As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn't stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch.

I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play.

The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I've never played before for this man.

As I played Amazing Grace, the workers began to cry. They cried, I cried, we all cried together. When I finished I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full.

As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "I never seen nothin' like that before, and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years."

I was wondering if you had the revised pattern for this one done yet?  Perhaps just the measurement changes would help.  Thanks a ton...

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Polymer Clay. ??
« on: October 20, 2011, 11:21:40 am »
Steve has several patterns for using polymer clay as an inlay.   I've run into a problem.

When sanding the clay after baking, the color of the clay tends to bleed over into the surrounding wood. If using a red clay then sanding the clay on the wood leaves a pinkish tint to the area around it. I haven't seen this on any of the project photos, so there must be a way to prevent it.    Do I just need to keep sanding until the bleeding stops?   Am I not baking the clay long enough?

Any hints or tips?

Thanks.

Brag Forum / Just a litle something I call "The King"
« on: September 30, 2011, 03:10:26 pm »
I cut this from a pattern by Pabreau. Thank you Pedro.

It is from western red cedar. I used a plywood backer on it as it is quite fragile only 2 points bridging the face. I showed it to my neighbor lady as i wanted some feedback and she bought it. I showed it to another lady and she ordered one.

Hope you guys like "The king".

Computer questions / Mac Vs. Micro
« on: August 08, 2011, 07:44:58 pm »
My computer is nearly 6 years old and is a pc running xp pro. I know any day now it's gonna crash and burn. I have it backed up etc. but I'm thinking about getting a mac this time around.

Can I use windows on a mac so I can still use things like irfanview and steve goods little program pattern makers?

Will I still be able to edit my website via a mac? I know maybe dumb questions but I've never even looked at a mac screen I just hear they (apple) are much more stable and user friendly. I'm tired of being held hostage to Microsoft and their new OPS all the time and then they stop supporting older OPS.

Should I go with an iMAC?

Pattern Requests. / Requesting your input.
« on: August 04, 2011, 11:17:57 am »
I have a customer who may want more than 1 sign so I need to really knock this first one out of the park.

I got some help to modify the font so it did not contain drop outs, but now it is so fragile in a couple of areas I'm torn as to how to handle it.

I think when I cut out the black I will then need to attach a backer board.  If this is what I do what should I use?  Keep in mind this will be subject to weather as it goes over the door to a horses stall.  The sign is being made out of WRC (western red cedar).  I'm leaning toward using another thinner piece of WRC as the backer.

Remember I'm removing the black.

Thanks for any help!
