First, how long does it take you (for those who do chess sets) to cut the average piece?

Second, does my avatar make me look fat?

Hey Bill, Haven't done any chess pieces, so can't answer that question.

On the real subject, I've cut 3 pieces so far, averaging 35 minutes each, just in case others haven't tried this yet. BTW, this is just cutting time, not prepping the wood, attaching pattern, etc.

what kind of you using for your chess pieces, i got the board done was getting ready to start some of the 3D chess pieces and wondering what would be a good wood for them.

I'm using walnut and maple, which I'm also going to use for the board.

I snapped this one just for you. I haven't done anything to the pieces yet, they're just the raw wood.

Note the bowl? One of the 4 projects I haven't finished yet (I keep getting these blasted orders).

Your photo also answered my next question Steve has 2 patterns and you used the 3-d rather than the 2-d.
Are you into turning as well? I like the bowl. I'll have to post a couple photos of bowls I have turned.
The lathe is gathering dust, and will probably continue to do so. Gasoline is nearly at $4.00 here in CJ, no way I can afford to run a generator at those prices. The bookeeper just informed me that our power bill reached the century mark last month. Since 1998 our prices for heating oil and propane have gone from .99 per gal. to $3 and more. Our pensions have not kept pace.

I know the feeling, Gabby. I'm looking into getting a cheaper auto.

As for the bowl, that was done with a scroll saw, not a lathe. Check out Steve's pattern book. The bowls are a lot of fun to make.
