This is a Jim Blume pattern I cut using Pegas 2/0 and #1 spiral blades. The project is 1/4 maple plywood with a 1/4 pine backer board. The project was stained with Minwax Natural and the entire project was sprayed with 4 coats of gloss poly sanded between each coat. The frame is from framing material I had on hand.

I finally ran across some better material. This is one of Steve's patterns cut from 1/4 inch BB with Pegus #3MGT. They were stack cut and finished with natural and red pine Minwas stain. They were finished with four coats of gloss with light 350 grit sanding between coats. Must say I was much happier with the final finish than I was with my last project.

Brag Forum / Poor Choice of Wood... Or not!?!
« on: July 25, 2021, 10:13:28 pm »
Been working on this piece for about a month now. The wood is 11 x 14 MDF laminated with an unknown veneer and is 3/4 inches thick. I thought the veneer was somewhat unique with the contrast of light and dark. I stained it with a natural oil and then sprayed with about a half dozen coats of clear gloss sanded with 300 between each coat. The picture makes it look like the finish is rough but it is very smooth. The piece is extremely heavy and gave me a fit trying to cut it on my small table. I used both Pegus #3 and #5 MGT and a few FD #5 Ultra Reverse. (This wood was tough on blades.) To clarify, the wood was reclaimed from a table that had been trashed. My wife works for a school and their mascot is a lion. Needless to say she has claimed this piece for herself.

Brag Forum / Name Plates

Had a request to do a name for my niece's stepdaughter. This was the first time I did everything from start to finish... creating a pattern, printing, cutting and finishing. Well my niece liked it so well that she wanted one for herself. She wanted the blue to match another project I had completed. I knew what would come next so I went ahead and did one for her husband as well. Anyway, I'm happy how they turned out.

Also, I'm know I'm not the only one scrolling. There has to be other projects being completed. Come on, lets see them!

Brag Forum / Busy Weekend
« on: June 29, 2021, 02:09:52 am »
Finished a couple projects this past weekend. Both are from Steve's patterns (thanks Steve). The lighthouse was really fun to complete and I got a little creative on the finish. Notice the lights are on in the house and lighthouse. The "Dogs Make Me Happy" was a project for a charity the wife asked me to do. She picked out the finish which is an antique oak. The backing board is flat whereas the front is gloss. The antique oak would not have been my choice but... happy wife, happy life.

This is another of Steve's patterns. This one was a little tricky because the wood I used was very brittle and kept wanting to chip out on small pieces. Also, I believe there are a couple layers of fat light in the plywood because it kept wearing out blades. I had to go through 8 to 10 blades doing this project. This project had more fret work than any I've done before, however I've started a hummingbird project that has considerably more. Anyway, hope you enjoy.

Brag Forum / Steve's Reflections

Was able to knock this project out pretty quickly. This is Steve's design called, "Reflections." I did a two part paint on the backing to reflect the water a different color than the horse. Definitely a lot of fun to cut and finish. My next project will be a little more complicated. A lot of interior cuts. Hopefully I'll finish knocking it out next weekend. Happy scrolling!

Brag Forum / Another Horse Trio

Finished this project today. Unfortunately I don't have any idea who to give credit to for the pattern. My wife found the pics on the web and thought they would look as a scroll project. I added the backs with a combo of yellow, orange and red to give them more of a desert look because of the cacti in the larger piece. Anyway, they were fun building and someone offered to buy them before they were even finished.

I finished another project today. Again this is from one of Steve's patterns (Thanks Steve) and feel it turned out pretty darn good if I say so myself. My niece, who is the horse guru of the family, has already claimed them. Anyway, the fun for me is the cutting and finishing, then seeing the joy in someone's eyes when you give the project to them!

By the way, the "fuzz" in the middle picture is actually reflection from the flash.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Thick Pieces
« on: May 03, 2021, 02:51:55 pm »
Hello everyone. I had surgery Friday and while I was limited with what I could do over the weekend I was able to sit in front of the scroll saw for a while. I was trying to cut one of Steve's designs in 1 1/2 material which I thought was oak but later determined it to be pine after running the blade through a knot. I have found I like the Flying Dutchman #5 Ultra reverse blades. When cutting the design I found I was able to control my cuts much better on this thicker piece. I knew I had to cut slow so the blade would straighten from any bend I created while pushing the material through the cuts. All was going well and I finished the interior cuts with no problems. When I started the outside cuts, I found the blade was bending much more than I anticipated, not from front to back, but from side to side. The tension on the blade was good but I still had considerable variance between the top of the material where I was following the pattern and the bottom cutting edge of the blade.

My question is, would a heavier blade prevented, or at least reduced, the amount of variance between the line I was cutting on the top of the material and where the blade tracked at the bottom of the material.

Unfortunately the piece broke after I finished the last outer cut but with some glue and patience I believe it can be salvaged. If it can be saved, I'll post a pic once it is completed.

Introduce Yourself. / Green Scroller
« on: April 16, 2021, 01:17:23 am »
Hello everyone,

I've been doing rough carpentry work for many years. Although I'm retired from law enforcement and continue to work in a second career, I and trying to set myself up for more delicate and artistic woodwork when I fully retire. I recently picked up a WEN Scrollsaw and believe the bug bit me pretty hard. It seems I can't wait to get in front of the saw.

I look forward to gaining knowledge from the many experienced scrollers on the forum. I've attached on of my first projects from Steve's patterns.

I'm in SE North Carolina, 63, married to a great woman, have 2 dogs, 2 cats, a gold fish pond with over 50 coy, and let a friend keep his cattle in my pasture (I already mow 6+ acres). All my horses have passed away and I've never replaced them. Doctors have told me I shouldn't be riding anyway with my back issues. I've got 20 acres total and my land abuts 4300 acres of pulpwood land. Needless to say with my career as a law enforcement officer I wanted to get away from urban environment.
