Getting Better I think
« on: October 30, 2010, 04:11:33 pm »
Good Day All!

Here is my latest cut.  I decided I would surprise my lady this morning with some flowers and name plate.  The basket and flowers were purchased, I made the name plate.  The more I cut, the more I am learning.  I am having an issue with the tape coming lose, and sawdust getting between the tape and pattern, thus not being able to see the lines.  I am starting to see some improvement, with my cuts, and learning from my "mistakes".  The main point is I am having a lot of fun!

Steven, if you're using Scotch Tape to hold the pattern down make sure to tape all around the whole pattern to prevent sawdust from getting under the tape.

Sorry, guess I should have mentioned that I am using wide clear packing tape.  The tape comes loose after I start cutting the lines.  Also the paper I have been using is thin laser printer type paper.  I am going to try a thicker paper, better tape, and wrapping the tape around the whole project has you suggested, and see what happens.  Thank you for the response, and the suggestion of wrapping tape around the whole project, I was not doing that.

Nice job Steven, Also when you wrap the tape completely around make sure there is no sawdust under the tape, this will prevent the tape from sticking.

You might try a spray adhesive on the back of your pattern.  I only wrap my wood with tape if it is a wood that burns easily.  I just spritz the back with spray adhesive and place my pattern.  It rarely comes off or lifts.  A little mineral spirits over the paper and it peels right off.  Some people use a hair dryer or heat gun to remove it.

I do use spray adhesive, but I think the paper I use is too thin, also I need to let the pattern sit for awhile, before I start cutting.

Thanks all for the comments, and suggestions, it is greatly appreciated.  I will try them all on my next cut.

I switched from spray adheasive to a regular glue stick. I put tape down, then glue the pattern, and sometimes another layer of tape. The second layer of tape is usually to protect my fingers from glue that isn't under the pattern, or to hold a stack together.
I had the issue of sawdust getting under my pattern, but haven't so much since I started using glue sticks.

Looks good , you know I've always used the spray pattern glue and have had great luck with it . Just have always put a good dose of it on , I also use a heat gun to take it off . I also use automotive paint thinner to take of the glue , it's cheaper than regular paint thinner.............
