General Scroll Saw Talk / Steve's Video - Wixey Digital Angle Gauge - for Jet and Excalibur Saws

He demonstrated how he mounted it to his Jet scroll saw and the introduction says it will also work on the Excalibur.  I just want to be sure of something he did not clarify and that might be confusing or misleading to others as it was nearly to me.  Both of the saws he mentions in the video have heads, not beds, that tilt.  Therefore mounting it to the head like he did will work great for those saws.  However if you have a Dewalt or others whose bed tilts his method will not work.  For those other saws whose beds tilt you should be able to obtain the same advantage from the device by merely setting it on your table with its magnets rather than having to make a mount, etc.

I think it is a great tool to have in your arsenal of scroll saw gadgets.  But since I am kind of new to all this, and since I own a Dewalt saw, I just wanted to make sure what I say above is correct.

General Scroll Saw Talk / What is the best material to use to cut portraits?

I'm a new scroller and am re  ady to try a few portraits.  The first one I plan to try and cut has quite a bit of detailed cuts.  I started on a 3/32" piece of baltic birch plywood but soon realized all the detail cuts are too much for such soft and thin wood.  I'm thinking of just going to heavier stock like maybe 1/4" baltic birch plywood.  What do those of you with experience cutting portraits use?

Any advice is appreciated.

Hello everyone.  My name is John and I live in Dallas, Georgia. I have just recently gotten into scrolling.  As with other pursuits I started browsing the web studying this craft extensively when I began.  Luckily I found Steve's wonderful site.  He is a genius in my opinion.  He is so good at explaining and demonstrating things and is genuinely dedicated to promoting the craft.  I have an new DeWalt 788 on order and have just "retired" my Ryobi SC165VS.  i really look forward to learning a lot from all of you.  Thanks for looking at my post and for being willing to share your experiences with those of us just starting out.
