Title: Deer in live edge maple slab (Charles Dearing)
Post by: Ray on August 26, 2014, 12:44:36 pm
Just finished up this one. It's one of Charles Dearing's great patterns.

This was the last piece of a rough cut maple slab that I've had lying around for about 6 years. It's figured maple with some burl features in it. I used the rest back then and finally decided to use this last one. I gave it a fresh run through the planer and the bark on the left side stayed in tact. There's even a little fuzzy green moss still on some of the bark.  8) The pictured don't capture the iridescent flame in the wood, especially down by the body and foot print.

The base is walnut and the removable drop in style I usually make for this kind of thing.

This one happens to be a gift, but I'm curious.
I've made several different things like this on live edge slabs like this and I've been asked several times by people about making one for them to buy.

What would you all think something like this should sell for? I know it can vary greatly between craft fair versus gallery, etc, but what would you ask for this one for example? Don't worry, you won't hurt my feeling a bit if you say 20 bucks, LOL  ;D

wow Ray  its beautiful...asfor price its looks priceless.....some wildlife fellow with a mantle top just waiting for that ornament will come along....I sell at a flea market so I couldn't judge what a craft sale would bring..I see items in craft and gift shops around here with similar theme with no less than 50 dollars..You should take it to a gift shop to see what they would price it at.........

Ray I would have to say that that piece was laying around for 6 years for just that pattern!  Outstanding work on this.  Love it.  Thanks for sharing this with us.

That's a fine piece of work.

If you look on ETSY. lots of live edge slab pieces are listed. Most are furniture (tables) but a few are artwork. $325 looks like a lower end. A piece like yours that has a strong theme factor would appeal to a smaller but maybe wealthier audience (bars, hotels, high-end hunting lodges). I would list it at $500 and see what happens.

Ray...bloody beautiful ...Down here in New Zealand that wood reach a fair price of around 400 plus.
If it was mine I'd place 600.. you can always lower the price but raising it can be a problem.

Absolutely beautiful. I would think around $4-500 would be very reasonable

Thanks folks!
This one is a gift, but I do get asked from time to time. I might be the worlds worst salesman though. I don't think I could sell water in the desert LOL  ;D

Usually, if someone asks me for something, I end up just telling them to reimburse me for the materials. Heck, if I already have material laying around I don't always ask for that either.

I really need to do better in that area. LOL

Ray, that is a beautiful piece.  not only is the wood gorgeous but you scrolling of the deer is outstanding.  I have no comment on a price, because like you I have a hard time selling anything.  I do feel that should and deserves to bring a good price.

Hi, Ray,
Absolutely beautiful work!
As for price, around here no-one would consider the prices already mentioned so, if
I were to try to sell that I would have to rely on a formula including the price of the
material (including blades, poly finish, etc), and then the hours it took to cut times the amount
per hour I wanted to charge for my work.
I know that wouldn't amount to $500 but, at least I had some control on what I charged
per hour for the work involved using that formula.
Thanks for sharing and God Bless! Spirithorse

Wonderful piece of work!
My daughter is building a new mountain home in CO where that would display very nicely.
SO now I have to find a slab of wood and get busy! Just hope mine turns out as well!!!
Biggest problem for me is finding the slab.

Beautiful job.  What did you use for a backer.

Beautiful job.  What did you use for a backer.

Thanks!
On slabs like this one, I use stiff rigid felt that I get at Micheal's Craft Shop. I'd feel funny putting Baltic birch plywood on the back of gorgeous wood.  Not only that, but I've never been able to get as deep and flat of a black with paint.
