Introduce Yourself. / Re: Hello from Iowa
« on: February 12, 2018, 09:53:50 am »
High Bob,

I spent the last 60 years in Iowa (LeMars - Ice Cream Capital of the World).  Retired last fall and decided to move south - to Lincoln, Nebraska.  It's still cold and snowy here, but love Lincoln.

I've been doing woodworking for most of my life too, but recently ran across scroll sawing and just love it.  When I was working at my day job it was a way to forget about the problems of the office for a few hours.  Now that I'm retired it's been a real joy to make items.  I'm looking at opening a store on Esty.com and will be hitting some craft fairs soon to see if I can make a few bucks - before my wifes finds me a job!!

Where abouts in Iowa you at?

Pattern Requests. / Re: Russell Clock Plans

I found it in a book from Scrollsaw Woodworking and Crafts called Big Book of Scroll Saw Woodworking.  Page 138.  It was in an article about Fretwork Basics by Rick Hutcheson.  The photo caption says it was designed by Rick.

Like I said I contacted Rick, his reply "I bought them from the old Scroller company that sold out everything to Winfield, Scroller. THey may not be in the catalog but they own the copyrights as far as I know.

I contacted Winfield and they responded "Sorry we don’t carry this clock as an individual pattern."

So I'm kinda stuck.  This help any?

Thanks for your quick response.

Pattern Requests. / Russell Clock Plans

Howdy Folks,

Several years ago I ran across the attached photo of a Russell Clock in a scroll saw magazine.  I really would like to build it, but I cannot find anyone who has the plan available.  Does anybody know if this is still available someplace?  I've been tempted to draw up my own plans but it would be a super big challenge.

I contacted Rick Hutchison, who made the one pictured.  He said he purchased it from Scroller.com, but Scroller.com apparently can't find it.

Anyone out there seen it, have it?

Thanks

Ask Steve a question. / Re: Dewalt DW788 foot pedal
« on: January 15, 2018, 02:04:46 pm »
djcarm,

I'm using a foot pedal as well, strictly an on/off switch.  I've experienced the saw seemingly to start at full speed even when I have it dialed down to 4 or 5.  I didn't think about removing the pedal control and trying it. It started last week and was really a pain so yesterday I removed the speed adjust / on-off switch control and checked for loose connections on the speed controller.  I did not see what looked like loose wires.  While in their I blasted some tuner cleaner onto the rheostat, but not sure if any got in since it looks pretty sealed up.

Today I did a lot of work with the saw and foot pedal and did not experience the speed issues when starting the saw.  Not sure if I fixed it or maybe bumped something and now it works.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Clock Insert Question
« on: December 30, 2017, 07:22:03 pm »
Hello all.  Been lurking in this forum for several weeks so thought it was time to post a question.

I'm into building smaller mantel clocks and have done several so far.  The next one I plan on building is the Glasgow clock from Finescrollsaw.com.

My question is I've seem to have run into a dead end on finding a small enough insert/fitup with a pendulum movement.  I'm looking for a 2-3/4 " to max of 3" total outside diameter insert/brezel for the Glasgow.  Or even finding a small dial/bezel/glass combo.

I've done a lot of poking around the net (Clockworks, Clockparts, Bearwood, Ronell, Amazon, eBay, etc.).  Any of you folks found a place that has the smaller time pieces?

I've even toyed with the idea of getting a clock insert that will fit and adding a pendulum only movement behind the insert...

Thanks
