General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Glue then stain?
« on: July 12, 2018, 01:18:43 pm »
I have used watered down acrylic paints as a wash coat then glued with reasonable results. No stain on glue up areas is the best way to go of course getting a layer of squeeze out glue on an area to be finished has turned many of my classy AAPlus masterpieces to a C Double Minus rating.

Amen to that Norm!!!

Welcome D-Tone. I have been recommending retirement to a number of people over the last 5 years (when I retired). You will be busier in retirement than you were while working, at least I find that to be the case.

GLC is correct, keep working with the scroll saw, you will find that practice does indeed improve your skills. It is the old question being brought to life for all of us - you know the question - the musician asked the cabby "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?" The cabbie said "Practice, practice, practice."

I agree WynnD, I got 2 of these last November and use them on both my scroll saw and lathe. they give plenty of light, and are reasonably priced. I had not been thinking in these terms for this thread until I read your post.

Nice tribute to your dad, Steve. My dad passed away in 1980. I was lucky to get back to Iowa with my 8 year old son to see him about a month before he passed. We lived in Alaska, as we still do, and the trip down took about 8 hours with all the layovers in Seattle and Chicago. The time there turned into a time of healing relationships and getting quality time with dad and my son.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Foot switch
« on: May 28, 2018, 09:32:23 pm »
I use a foot switch as well. I prefer the deadman style, as I don't have to search with my foot for the switch when I need to stop cutting, either because of my stupidity, or most often, a blade that has broken or slipped out of its blade holder.

This is my 2 cents worth, which also is no doubt, only as good as the paper it is printed on.

I was working on a piece for my wife, the quilter in the family. It have four duplicate fretwork squares to cut out that were supposed to represent quilt blocks. As I was finishing the last on I snapped a portion of the fretwork. i cut a duplicate and with a little glue, and a little time made the fix. I will, of course, always see that square differently than the others, but so far I am the only one to really notice.

Steve, I can relate to your comments about hearing loss. I have tinnitus something fierce. the ringing never stops, and has been such for over 40 years. I was in the Air Force in the late 60's-late 70's. Had a great job as a musician. Back then we did not use any kind of hearing protection and over the years I was in my hearing gradually worsened. I was involved in music in bands and orchestras for over 25 years. I was talking with another young man a few years ago who told me that now they have decibel meters in the rehearsal rooms and they all wear either headphones or earplugs, some of them use both. Of course the VA and the military does not want to admit they were complicit in any of our hearing problems, so I have learned to cope with the ringing as best I can. However, that being said, I would love to listen to an orchestra or a band and not have to filter out the ringing to enjoy the music.
