Title: "WEATHER ALERT" ! ! !
Post by: GrayBeard on January 30, 2011, 11:32:57 am
My Alderman is a meteorologist for the US National Weather Service and he rarely talks about the weather but last night he posted on FaceBook that we, in the St. Louis, MO area, are in for a very nasty winter storm that could be a BIGGIE!

Starting roughly Monday afternoon and looks like it will include: rain, freezing rain, sleet, ICE and snow.

No predictions of the accumulations but they are certain it will be a significant weather event.

Got my propane heater and stove, plenty of firewood and fully stocked freezer and pantry!

This just in.....

Direct quote from my weather guru..."Patrick Barclay.. Yikes! Not good when the weatherman compares this upcoming storm to the 2006 Big Ice Storm and 1982 Blizzard all in one. Early predictions are 1/2 inch of ice and then 8 inches of snow."

You may not hear from me after Monday for a while...

Stay Tuned!

~~~GrayBEard~~~
Latest "NOAA" update!
Monday: Freezing rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 33. East wind between 7 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible.
Monday Night: Freezing rain likely. Cloudy, with a low around 28. Northeast wind between 7 and 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
Tuesday: Snow, freezing rain, and sleet, becoming all snow after noon. The freezing rain and snow could be heavy at times. Widespread blowing snow after noon. High near 30. North wind between 13 and 18 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%.
Tuesday Night: Snow and widespread blowing snow. The snow could be heavy at times. Low around 18. Blustery. Chance of precipitation is 90%.
Wednesday: Widespread blowing snow and a chance of snow. Mostly cloudy and cold and blustery, with a high near 20.
GB I hope that the weather does not get to bad out your way and that you won't be cut off. I see that you have stocked up nicely so you won't want for heat and food.
Take care of yourself.
Latest is .5" ice and then anywhere from 8 to 20 inches of snow by Wed. afternoon! Strong winds and ice on powerlines do not mix!
May be a long, cold week!
I just seen our forecast, and we are supposed to get all snow, up to two feet. They said that last year and we ended up with 41". I hope they are wrong about your ice and all you get is snow. Better get prepared now, bottled water, candles, extra batteries, and anything else you think you might need.
Chicago area has a blizzard watch for Tuesday - Wednesday any where from 6"-33" of snow. But they think more like 10"-18" Tuesday night then the wind picks up.  Nah! it will probably miss!
The front heading your way just past through here in Southern California. It rained today, only about 1/3 of an inch. Supposed to go  down to the low 40's tonight. I guess it is supposed to build as it moves eastward. Good luck!
It does look like it will be an adventure.  I'm in St. Louis too.  I absolutely have to go to work tomorrow but will plan on working from home for the next couple of days if this is as bad as they say.  That assumes I will have power.  They're saying to expect power outages because of the ice.  It should be an interesting week.
Just heard the latest update here and they are predicting rain turning to ice turning to snow (6-12").  Probably means power out and I live in an all electric house so will spend today storing up some water and moving in a kerosene heater.  The kids are close by so they can help if needed.  With negative temps sure doesn't look like a fun week.
GB, I remember 2006 very well.  No electric, No water, and no heat.  And was stranded for almost 2 weeks.  Looks like another is in the making.  Watching it very carefully.
It's here....freezing rain, about 1/8 in of ice on the bird feeders already....Ran to W~M earlier and it was total chaos!
We're well stocked and have gas stove and water heater so we are OK there and with plenty firewood (not Designer) and charcoal for the Weber grill I can cook so we won't starve.
Freezer and fridge are both well stocked as well as the pantry.
Plenty of 'libations' to ward off the cold and possible boredom.
If power goes then no TV or Phone or Internet!
Two full 20# propane tanks so can use the propane heater if needed.
Let 'er Rip!!!
It's coming to southern Ontario too.  Predictions are for snow to start tonight, continue tomorrow into Wednesday ....for a total of at least 12".
I wonder if it will beat the big storm we had in December.  That one closed the university for 2 days.  I was able to work on my Christmas projects inside and not worry about what was outside.
We'll see, I guess.
Just wondering...do you have enough oil and fuel?
Title: Re: "WEATHER ALERT" ! ! !
Post by: cherie on January 31, 2011, 05:43:42 pm
Have enough oil, but propane may be another story.  LOL.  Oh well.  A few years ago, I learned how to survive melting snow and using clean boiled snow for water when we had no way of getting any.  This is well before I met Jaun. Found that as long as I strained it, and boiled it well, it was great for cooking, cleaning and even sponge baths.  LOL
If this thing doesn't hit pretty soon will be bad news.  Started out predicting 6-12" now its 12-18" with blizzard conditions.  Since we're starting with freezing rain could be nasty.  Filled my clean water jug, one bathtub and have been cleaning out the fridge.  Cooked up some stuff that I can warm on the kerosene stove.  Won't be able to make coffee so hope I get that done in the am before the electric goes.  Cleaned and filled the kerosene lamps and put fresh batteries in the radio so guess I am as ready as I can get.
Getting some snow now here in Chicago. Worst is supposed to be Tuesday night into Wednesday. They are actually posting a blizzard warning! 12-18 inches or more of snow then the wind picks up. Lake effect snow could dump 30 or more in N. Indiana. So this is global warming?
Title: Re: "WEATHER ALERT" ! ! !
Post by: GrayBeard on February 01, 2011, 12:21:59 am
Lull between fronts right now...supposed to hit hard about 3:00 a.m. with heavy freezing rain.
More ice means less snow and vice versa.
But either way this area is gonna be paralyzed for a couple days.
current prediction is 1/2 to 3/4" of ice and then anywhere form 8 to 20" of snow on top if that!
Electric line crews have been brought in from other areas and Nat'l Guard has been mobilized to help elderly and stranded.
Stay tuned folks...
Will keep reporting as long a power holds out
Hurray, I still have power.  The ground was white with sleet at 2:30 and whiter with snow at 6 and still coming down with large flakes.  8-20" expected.  Some power outages south of me where they got more ice.
1/4" of ice, now sleeting at a furious pace!
Have 1.5 gazillion birds feeding madly outside the door
Went to put more feed out this morning, stepped on what I thought was leftover snow and almost went on my less than padded butt!
Ice and sleet covered the snow left from last week!
Still predicting heavy snow later today, guessing any where from 7" to 20"!
Going to be a long week...
Temps dropping into Single Digits by tomorrow night!
Welcome to winter in the midwest at the confluence of the two big rivers!
Missouri Dept. of Transportation has been telling everyone to get where they have to be by NOON and be prepared to stay there!
Large motion picture chain just announced they are closing all their theaters.
The "Blues" Hockey team is now determining if they are going to cancel tonight's game...Won't be anyone there to watch so why play and take chances?
Busses and light rail will operate on delayed schedules until told to shut down by either the Emergency Management division or the weather.
Some Nat'l Guard troops have been deployed and are standing by in area hotels to help where needed, mostly rescuing the elderly who may lose power.
Sitting here going thru my lessons to learn "Gimp" so I can make patterns from my own photos and ideas!
Don't worry Paul...long learning curve!!!
Wow! we bit the bullet!
Seems like the drier air is swinging around the back side of the storm so we may have seen the worst of the storm!
Nearby areas were not so lucky and Chicago is catching it heavy!
Central Missouri got heavier snow but we lucked out with sleet, about 3 inches and maybe a two inch snow on top here at my house!
Within the last hour I have seen the visibility improve and can see the lights at the HS across the lake.
Now the bitter cold and wind is picking up and we will be in the deep freeze tonight and for the next couple days!
Still very little traffic moving around the St. Louis area and here in St. Peters, 35 mis. to the west.
Finally convinced the idiots to stay home!
LOL, GB, don't you mean we "dodged" the bullet?
Got help from the neighbors and pushed about 3" of sleet off my driveway.  Could have been a lot worse.  My street hasn't seen a plow yet but I guess that isn't surprising.  They're all pretty busy.  I can see a fairly major street from my front window and a car does pass every once in a while.  I don't think I have seen any actual snow.  It's been either freezing rain or sleet all day long.
I guess I'll have to wait and see what tomorrow morning brings.  I brought home enough work for 2-3 days so I'm not going to kill myself trying to get to the office if the tv ppl still say it's a mess.
We also had some ice rain in Germany around Nuernberg - traffic there broke down completely.
EDIT: also "Blitzeis" in the northern parts of Germany this morning, a lot of car accidents.
In Munich it is still just cold but dry. Places are slippery due to the ice.
David, I am about 4 hours away from GB.  The power starting fluctuating last night due to high winds which I thought was going to take out tree branches and power lines.  We got about 1/4 ice, and a small amount of snow.  We were lucky this time.  Still have power and believe it or not, water.  Jaun was down in Louisiana, but wanted to head back here. I had to convince him to stay away and that I would be fine.  I have also been sick, so that did not help.  I am almost over it now and feel much better.
Now the cold wind sets in and this will be the big test for some of us living in mobile homes out in the middle of nowhere.  LOL.  Thanks guys!!
I love my woodworking family.
London is just on the edge of the big storm--only the elementary schools are closed.  I could hear ice pellets hitting the windows at 4:00am today.  But there isn't alot of snow here.  The blizzard warning was cancelled at 8:00am.
So, I'm cleaning up the slop on the floors from the university students instead of scrolling.
Oh well, I know I'll be at the saw tonight.
Thanks for the comment, Torsten.  I have made it a habit to be as positive as I can.
We are 'digging out' and things are starting to move again...
Sun shining on new snow and all is very pretty.
I-70 has been re-opened and moving slowly.
So far traffic in the Metro area is on the light side, 17? and 20 mph winds tend to keep people indoors!
Birds are back out wondering why I have't refilled the feeders..next project for the morning.
Sure wish I could fire up the saw but too darn cold in the garage...Maybe next week.
Shelf cleaning and re-arranging day in the laundry/work area today...looking for a box of old pictures to scan and share with family.
Hockey playoffs start Friday so will be busy over the weekend.
Next weekend we have a national figure skating competition at our THREE rinks and will be VERY busy all weekend. I will be working the 'concierge' desk advising participants and families of services in our area....
Busy ol' geezer...but I love it!
    Terre Haute has an inch of ice. Everything is shut down. The worst ice storm we have ever seen. Trees and power lines down every where. We were lucky, lights flickered, but never lost power. About 20,000 homes without power, at this time. the city is at a level 1 emergency. No vehicles on the road, emergency vehicles only, unless going for supplies. I've got to try to make it in. Got to get supplies to 8 firehouses. I'll be glad when spring gets here. Dave :o
I can remember back in 1999 I lived in West Terre Haute  that winter was nasty . We are getting light snow right now in Western Pa . I open the garage door had to go and brake the ice off of the out side of it . I never had to do that before . The wind gets a little gusty but nothing to bad I think what this area is getting is just coming off of Lake Erie .
I second what GB said!
Gonna git cold here tonight -20 wind chill! The county told my sons HS to stay closed tomorrow because it is a commuter school and roads are still going to be bad with the wind  and all. Our community college is not opening until noon tomorrow so my son who goes there will only have one class until further notice.
We got dug out then the snow plows filled it back in twice! :(
The kids are digging tunnels and caves, having a blast! :)
It makes me feel all warm inside to know you are all safe tonight. The forum has become so much a family and so very close that it is amazing sometimes. I read each and every post as a letter telling about each and every members lives from day to day. That being said I am so glad to hear you are all safe, warm and sound tonight and may God keep each and everyone that way.
Untill tomorrow,
Russ
Very nicely said, Russ!
That is exactly why I tend to give out "TMI" at times but I feel you all are my family and I want to keep you informed.
HUGZZZZZZZ to Every One of you!
As I just got up this end, I had to check on my forum family first. As I see the weather out there is bad, but you guys are at least safe. I'm off to the community centre in about an hour, so will only check in again later this afternoon. Have a safe day all of you.
Well, we're not exempt in Texas.  My son was snowed in East of Dallas yesterday and we are expecting snow today in the Austin area.  Wind chill was -5 yesterday and about that this morning.  They say if you don't like the weather in Texas - stick around for 5 minutes.  It will be 70 degrees for the super bowl!
Nothing but snow here in coastal Maine.  Had some good wind and some drifting, but nothing that was too tough to handle.  Sawdust Dave, how'd you fair up there in Jefferson?
Glad everyone's okay here, let's hope our Aussie friends come out okay too!
One thing for small town living.  My post office called yesterday as my inhalers had come in and they wanted to know if I was OK for a couple of days.  Hopefully they will get delivered today as I have been on half dosage to make it last and ran out last night.
Kepy, Neither wind nor rain nor hail nor dark of night will keep them from their appointed rounds.  Or something like that.  Make sure they know you need them today.  How have you been?  What did you decide to do about your surgury?
Well out weather is going to warm up for a couple of days before next weeks single digit highs again.  It is all the way up to 6 above when i came to work but the wind is blowing.
there is 200 or more vehicles stranded on Interstate 29 right now in a whiteout due to high winds and drifting snow.  wind gusts up to 60 mph.  some of these people have been stranded since last night at 10 oclock.  i hope this doesnt cost any people their lives but they wont last long in a car if it runs out of gas.
ill keep every posted.  and i pray that this storm passes quickly for everyone with minamal effects.  mother nature has a cruel sense of humor some times
GB..The south for me is about 40 miles north of the MS Gulf Coast....I did my share of duty in the cold northern weather when I was a child ( too many years ago )  We lived in Montana for 8 years, so I think I did my part !!!!
Julie, got my inhalers yesterday so am good to go for a while.  My diet may get interesting as can't get out to go to the store.  Roads are only good for 4 wheel drive and no warm up in sight with snow forecast for 4 of the next 5 days.  At least we haven't lost power which is a blessing.  My surgery is on hold as was supposed to have a CT scan in Jan but had to cancel due to weather and has been rescheduled for the 15th.  I told everyone that I couldn't have the cat scan as the cat died.LOL
     The last day of June. I hate to wish my life away, but it can't get here soon enough! I can take my vacation time in days, if I want. So I've been taking Fridays off. I get 20 vacation days and 3 P-Days. got to use them or lose them. Plus the Comp time that I get, being called in. They do have to pay me for that, Fed Law. Also, the last time I called in sick was 25 yrs ago. So I have built up 6 months in paid sick time, if I want to use it. Doesn't seem like 30 yrs have came and went so quickly. Dave 8)
Our airport has been down due to the wind forcr here, that will be Schiphol, but we don't have it half as bad as our Aussie friends and some of you. Thanks for keping us posted.
    No. You have to use it. They use too. But they changed all that. If you don't miss. You get a bonus at the end of the year. So far the state hasn't touch our pension. I'm on PERF, (Public Employee Retirement Fund). That is broken down into different groups, (Teachers, Judges, Police), etc. The Govenor got his fingers on the Teachers Fund, and damb near wiped it out. He's set his sights on the Police and Firefighters. So far we haven't allowed him to get his hands on it. Dave 8)
When I retired five years ago the paid us 80% of our sick leave up to 1200 hrs, 100% of our vaction up to 800 hrs. Called in sick for six weeks before I retired, cashed out the rest of my sick and all my vaction time and walked away with a nice chuck of change. Used the money to buy my boat.  8)
