Looking for paint ideas - take a look at Sue Mey's gnomes.  The gnomes with sign is on the todo list for Christmas.  They will be personalized etc.

I use Zinzer seal coat (small pieces I dip)  to start and then run past my Max Mop that has 180 grit.  (quite old so it is like 220).

I then spry with the zinzer shellac or with spray on poly.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: Removing Patterns
« on: June 09, 2021, 06:05:47 am »
I use all methods as above depending on the project.

I have found that using shelf paper with an intricate pattern, the shelf paper lifts more than painters tape.  It is easier to put on bigger pieces,

If I adhere directly I use a heat gun too but I find that there is a glue residue left behind that I have to wipe down the piece with mineral spirits.

My go to blade is FD Ultra Reverse too.  1 1/2 is tough going no matter what.  I rarely use more than a number 5. I am doing a bunch of mini birdhouses right not and I wrap the block in packing tape as it does help.  With really hard wood I switch to a Polar blade as there are no reverse teeth and he saw dust clears better.

When doing this type of cutting I never push too hard as it definitely will go off the line and bend.  Let the blade do the cutting.

Another thing is sharp blades.  UR do dull quicker and that is what will cause blades to break.

PS:  I have a sample of Pegas MGT blades that a lot of people like and they are more aggressive and I find harder to control.  It maybe just getting used to but I have been using on some of my birdhouse and cut okay.

I did the google and found it everywhere too.

Interestingly, this product is made in China and I could buy from Aliexpress for about $20 Cdn including delivery.

I like the idea but it would take a a lot of time for me to paint.

It is only 5" x 7" but expands to 21 inches when out of the box.

I use Inkscape.

To figure out how to put on circle a good video is here.  https://youtu.be/XFFZXgBtNlg

There are many more but I like on you tube but I like Logos by Nick or Davies  Media.

If not a circle look for the video about putting text on curve.  https://youtu.be/3q0HGoeLCmw

Once you get the text the way you want it then convert the text to a path and union your path to the bottom.

If you want to post the pattern and text I will give it a try.

What glue are you using?

I use Weldbond.  It says it sticks anything to anything.  I have used for gluing backing on that has been painted and so far no problem.

It dries clear too.

I have made the Wobble Bowl from Steve's catalogue in 1/4 BB.  I looks okay.  In fact good enough for 40 to be added to the Daddy do list.  My daughter wants to give to her teachers in her school this Christmas.  She is the principal.

They to look better in real wood but BB is okay,

Also, attached is a picture of a swirl bowl in BB.

PS:  These are actually baskets.  Bowls hold soup.  Baskets leak.

I know I did a real bowl in plywood 1/2 and it was just okay,  A Carole Rothman design.

Yep.  I saw that and I am quite sure that is walnut and maple.

Steve rarely comes here so this are my thoughts.

In the picture with the write up it looks like walnut and maple.  You could use any wood and it would look great.  Contrasting looks nice but not it would look okay in all one wood too.

Using Baltic Birch would be possible but I have a lot of issues trying to stain plywood as the edges sucks up the stain differently.

I am in the process of cutting 40 of Steve's Wobble Bowl in BB and I tried to stain a maple colour and looked awful. We are going to just leave a plain.

Below are the 2 prototypes one in real maple and the other in BB.  The boss (my daughter) went with BB as the cost is 30 cents versus $1.50 - 2.00  for material.  ( I pay for the BB but she would have to pay the maple).

PS:  If you use BB the 1/2 inch BB is usually 12mm which is slightly shy of 1/2. and so you would have to adjust the slot.  Same if do using 1/4.

I am a font gunky and have saved a lot of fonts (47 scrollable) and can not find that font.  It maybe that Steve took another font and added the bridges.  I looked at all my fonts and could not find a font with the L or the v.

I have done a few sign patterns for weddings and have used Scroll_ScriptMT,  I looks pretty good.

In order to fit on Steve's pattern you have to be around 40pts unless you enlarge his pattern.

Here is an example,  If you do not have this font and want to use it send me a PM with your email

Here is my shot at it.

Note the "Tis the season" cut the grey.  Could figure out how to change colour.

I did it with words only and then I did a second with a football.

If you want another font etc please let me know.

Also, PM me your email address I can send as a PDF and then you can resize accordingly.

Quite sure the font if Bookman Old style  I only have a semi bold but it might be bolder.

I work in Inkscape and can stretch the 'O" up and it looks pretty close to the same.
