Title: 2 day Intarsia
Post by: trailfndr on July 07, 2013, 08:40:51 pm
I spent a good part of Saturday and Sunday working on this Judy Gale Roberts pattern.  I used Aromatic Cedar, Oak, Walnut, Poplar, Bloodwood, Western Cedar, Mahogany, and Pau Amarillo.  Size is 20 x 14 inches.  Now all I need to do is come up with a fair price for it.

I currently have about 5 more patterns of Judy's so now I have to decide which one to do next.

We have a gentleman in our town that does beautiful intarsia work.  His going rate is $1.00 per piece of wood, and he sells a lot of his work.

Just a thought.

Looks quite nice, thanks for letting us have a look.

That is awesome Al. It would take me a couple of weeks to do a piece like that. And it still would not meet your standard. Thanks fot sharing. I am wanting to do another intarsia piece but I cannot decide what, I am thinking a lighthouse scene. Getting appropriate wood is the problem around here.

that's a beauty.

For pricing, I was told that Intarsia works usually sell for $3-5 per piece in the work. Don't know if that makes sense in your case.

So with 53 pieces of wood,  I would be looking at $159-$265  Wow...that's a wide range.  I suppose a lot would depend on the wood used.  Many of the exotic hardwoods are very expensive.

Pricing, in the business world is always done the same.  It is 'what ever the market will bear'.
How much time, effort, talent, and cost you put into it doesn't matter at all in pricing.  It has Everything to do with profit and whether or not it I worth making to sell.  However the selling price is always controlled by what customers are willing to pay.
A glass of pop costs a couple of pennies to make and can sell for over a dollar.  Why, because people will pay that much.
