Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Wooden Spittoon (kind of)
« on: November 09, 2014, 09:23:34 pm »
Not really, but I got you attention!

Rather then throwing small cutouts in the garbage can after each interior cut, I found that using a small plastic cup from applesauce or a fruit cup makes a great mini-trash can.  I pick up the cutout and drop it into the cup.  When the cup is full, I dump it into the trash.  If you are really good, you can finesse the blade to launch the cutout into the cup. Great fun!

General Scroll Saw Talk / D788 cutting a straight line
« on: October 16, 2014, 09:28:39 pm »
I am having trouble cutting a straight line with ol yeller.  I need to hold the wood at about 30 degrees to the blade to get a straight cut.  I use flying dutchman blades and have the blade tension set at 3.5.  Any comments/suggestions?

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Ads on Steve's blog
« on: August 19, 2014, 09:02:58 pm »
Steve hosts a great, FREE site that got me started as a sawdust artist.  The site is professional and patterns are well made for all skill levels. For the time it must take, he deserves to make some money.  He purchases tools for review and gives things away. You can't  do this without money.

Yes, I see the ads on the website.  I know Google places the ads as part of the hosting process. I watch TV.  There is about 22 minutes of content and 8 minutes of commercials.  Commercials pay for the free TV.  If you want commercial free, pay for premium TV or Sirrius radio.

If you don't want ads purchase a pattern book.

Keep up the great work Steve! (I don't read the ads)  OK, I read Mike's Woodshop and bought blades.  Rant is over, back to the shop.

I used to use a small brush to stain my projects.  It was slow and frustrating.  Now I dunk the piece in the stain can and shake off the excess.  I then blot it with a rag and give it a few shots of air from my air compressor.  Done in no time flat!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Outdoor shed/shop
« on: May 16, 2014, 10:28:36 pm »
Has anyone used an outdoor shed as a shop? Of course I would run two electrical circuits any use electric heat. Any issues with equipment in freezing winters then heating up? My wife doesn't like the dust and clutter in the garage. She may have an an alternate plan if I like it out there...

Swap Shop / Re: Dewalt 788 for sale

Janet:

I see this is an old post but I noticed that the air hose cracked on your D788.  This also happen on mine.  I took off the cracked segment, heated the big end on the next good one with a paint stripping heat gun (very hot) and slid it on the saw.  Worked perfectly.

I love my Dewalt too, and yes the table is not centered.  I thought it was just like me-a little off center!  Now I know how to fix it.   Thanks

If you wear pants with cuffs, you don't have to worry about tracking sawdust into the house.  Just don't cross your legs!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Hold Down Foot

I got a very nice hold down foot with my Dewalt 788.  I took it out of the box and threw it in a corner of the workbench. Still have all ten fingers.

Buy the Dewalt 788.  If you can't afford new, try CraigsList or other online sites. It is a great saw for the money.  Buy cheap, get cheap. Having inferior tools is no fun. :(

I too had a cheap scroll saw.  Nothing will turn you off like poor quality tools.  I would suggest finding someone who has a Dewalt788 and trying it.  You could also test drive one in a store.  I would then look on CraigsList for one used. I saw one on CL for $250. I am still amazed at how quiet and smooth the DW788 is.  My old Master Mechanic scroll saw ($75 new) was more frustrating than it was worth.

I bought the Dewalt stand with my saw from Grizzley.  Can't beat a stand engineered for the job.

If you didn't, or couldn't afford it at the time check CraigsList.  I found a Dewalt stand for $25.00! I'm sure it could be modified for other saws.

The wood depends on what you are making.  Color, texture, grain, and ease of cutting the desired pattern are factors.

I get wood at Lowes and Home Depot.  They have a nice selection of 1/4 and 1/2" wood for many scroll projects.  Michael's crafts has Baltic birch plywood (use the coupons). I also get hardwood cut-offs at my local lumberyard.  They gave me a half dozen two-foot pieces of various hardwoods for $5.00.  A friend has a planer and planes them down to 1/2" for me.

Hope it helps.
