Finished this for my Mother, made from 1.5" oak, designed it myself, it was tough to cut and was my first proper project in hardwood. A tough learning curve and you can see some burns but I believe they add character :)

It doesn't replace a painless machine.

Freudian slip or deliberate? :)

I think the only way you will know is by using it. Check your blade (once tensioned) is in perfectly vertically with a tri-square, both left/right and front/back and then switch it on and hope there's no blade wobble.

Personally I would think you'll be fine and that they say that to cover themselves just in case.

I used to use a glue stick to stick the paper direct to wood but found it was leaving residue, especially if it wasn't completed/removed quickly. I then read that people did this but on "painters tape" but I never found a good (cheap) source for this in the UK so I tried masking tape and it works a treat. A few strips of wide masking tape across the wood, glue stick the pattern to that and then I can leave it on as long as I want without any residue remaining when I remove it.

Just curious, but why don't you just print it out, glue it on and cut around it? I thought that was how everyone did it. (I'm not criticising in ANY WAY, I'm genuinely curious as I'm pretty new to this.)

Good price. I use one of these although it transpired that with my very short sightedness I found that the magnifier doesn't help so (unfortunately) I just use it for the bright daylight light and this in itself is excellent.

I'm sandwiched between Sheffield and Rotherham.

Loving this hobby - if only I had more time for it!

The videos on this site: http://www.scrollsawparadise.com/#!tutorials/c2269 helped me enormously when I started. Try to open them directly in YouTube so you can see bigger versions. Watch all his tutorials and also print out and practice using his test pattern.

Grab yourself some quality plywood about 8-10mm thick and practice on that. I know it can be expensive for what it is to practice on, but it'll be flat, it'll cut cleanly and there's no grain to worry about (which on some woods can influence/twist the blade.)

I'd also recommend using a double-reverse blade (something like http://www.woodworkscraftsupplies.co.uk/doublereverse-tooth-scroll-blades-144s-p-440.html) so that the bottom of the cut is as clean as the top.

Take your time, it's not a race, don't push the wood in, let the weight of your hands move it forwards gently and don't be scared to turn the piece around quickly - you'll be surprised how fast and sharp you can turn once you've got the hang of it.

But really do take the time to watch the videos; they'll show you how to use/abuse the unwanted part of your wood to turn around in and come back so you can get an angle where you want a sharp point rather than a turn. Seriously - invest some time in watching them!

Good luck and have fun!

Ironically I am actually the Head of IT and do have control over "content filters" but I'd never tamper with the approval settings of antivirus software when I can't guarantee that a third-party website ISN'T malicious. I wish this software (WebRoot) would give me a report on this website so I can test it further and possibly report it as a false-positive to the vendors but until then I'll stick to using it on my phone or at home.

Hi all,

Yes I'm hooked. Bought a "cheap" Einhell that I had nothing but problems with so upgraded to a super-duper Excalibur and now the only thing I'm lacking is time!
