My ShopSmith Strip Sander has a pulley like that and it allows me to sand inside shapes.  Take a look at the following ShopSmith training video and see if maybe that answers your question (and maybe allows some additional functionality for your new sander).

Wow!  I thought some of the fretwork projects I do were tedious.  That's an awesome looking shell.

Tough problem.  The hole has to be large enough to get the blade (and pins) through.  I understand there are some saws that have adapters that will allow you to use pinless blades.  Maybe someone knows about those if you told us what brand of saw you have.

Not much help.  Sorry,

Dennis

That's a good idea to apply spacers to both sides of the middle section.

Thanks

Thanks Don,

Those look really nice.  Thanks for the picture.

You're right, they were a lot of work.  I stack cut them too but only did three at a time.  I thought I'd glue the spacers on the middle and back layers before spraying and then scrape the tops of the spacers for final assembly.  That way the edges would already be done.

Thanks for all your help in your responses to questions from those of us who need a lot of help.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Finishing Christmas Ornaments

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for ideas on how some of you might have finished Steve Good's custom Christmas ornaments for last year.  This is the one with three layers - back:  house and tree; middle: snowman and front: name and year.  I have 35 of these cut out, ready to finish and assemble (I left off the year so I could use them for this year).  I've cut them all out of 1/8" Baltic Birch and I'm in a bit of a dilemma as to how to finish them before assembly.

For some of you who made these, did you leave them natural (lacquer or oil), stain them or use some other finish?  Any suggestions (pictures) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Dennis

This may be a little late looking at how nice your flag turned out but, here's a link to a video that shows an inlay being done with a product called Timber Mate and CA Glue that looks like it would work well for you.

The question of storing and identifying blades seems to come up pretty often.  I store my blades in the plastic tubes that are available in several places.  When ordering blades I simply take the label that usually comes in the plastic bag that the blades are delivered in, roll it up (like around a pencil) and then insert it in the tube before putting the blades into the tube. That way its pretty easy to quidkly find the type/size blade I need.

Thanks to both of  you.  I'll try both ways.

Just knowing that someone with experience agrees that those tight cuts are harder when the table or blade are tilted helps a lot.

Thanks again,
Dennis

Yep, that's the kind of thing I'd like to do.  Beautiful work!

Just having someone say that the corners are hard is a big help.  I was really afraid I was going to get a lot of replies saying it wasn't such a big deal.  Thanks Jim.

One clarification though, if you don't mind, by putting your lighter wood underneath the cedar, do you then insert your eagle into the cedar from underneath as opposed to what Steve Good does on his dolphin box inlay video?

Ask Steve a question. / Cutting Inlays

This is a duplicate post from another area but, this one seems to get more responses so, sorry about the duplicate if you've read both.

Hi everyone,

I've been scrolling for a few years (brand new to the blog here however) and have done some things that I'm kind of proud of.  However, I'd like to try doing some inlay work and I'm having some real grief figuring out how to cut tight corners and points with my table set at an angle.

For example, Steve Good has a Beveled Nativity Scene in his pattern book and I can't figure out how to (with my saw table set an 2-2/2 - 3 degrees) turn the corners at the points on the star.

Another example would be a cheese board with an inlaid mouse that I found on the internet.  The end of the mouse's tail and it's feet are driving me crazy.  I can't figure out how to turn those corners

Any help that anyone could give me or, point me to a video, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dennis
