General Scroll Saw Talk / Spiral Blades
« on: July 10, 2018, 10:07:00 pm »
I've never seriously used spiral blades before but, now have a project that's too big to turn on my saw and so must use spiral blades.  The project is in pine so, not too difficult.  I have tried some test cuts with Flying Dutchman blades that I have on hand (New Spiral NS3, 27 t.p.i and Spiral SPFE3 40 t.p.i). The 'New Spiral' blades are terrible.  They seem to be incredibly slow.  The regular 'Spiral' blades seemed to cut at a reasonable speed without too much difficulty.

Before I purchase a bunch of blades for this project can anyone share their recommendations for spiral blades?  I'll be doing some more testing for blade sizes but right now I'm probably leaning toward number 3 or smaller blades.

I would appreciate any suggestions for blades from some of you who have more experience with them than I do.

Thanks,
Dennis

Thanks for your comments.  Kind of sounds like I need to get an opinion from my doctor.

Thanks again.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Finger Numbness
« on: May 30, 2018, 08:35:39 am »
Does anyone else ever experience a numbness or steady tingling in their fingers as a result of time spent with their scroll saw?

For the past several months, I have a constant numbness or tingling in the fingers on my right hand.  It's not painful at all.  I guess the best way to describe it it that it kind of like the feeling you get after you foot or arm has 'gone to sleep' or, in your lips after a Novocain injection following a dental visit. I'm not sure if it's from my scroll saw addiction or, if I might have some other issues going on.

Wow.  I'm not normally an intarsia fan but, that's beautiful.

I've also found that a very light sanding with 220 grit garnet paper on the top of each blade just before mounting nearly eliminates blade slippage for me. :)

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: Using Mineral Oil -Does It Ever Dry?

Click on this link for an awesome food/child-safe mineral oil and beeswax finish.  http://www.toymakingplans.com/website/how-to/non-toxic-wood-toy-finish.html

These folks have a video there showing how to make this finish.  It's easy and I use it for all kinds of projects besides toys.

They also have a ton of cool toy patterns.

I also use FD-UR blades from Mike's Workshop (mikesworkshop.com).  I've cut quite a few compound ornaments from 2" x 2" poplar stock for this year and found that #7 Polar blades (same source) have done a great job without any burning.

Hope you enjoy your 'new' Hawk as much as I enjoy mine.  I've had a Hawk 220 for nearly 15 years now and never had any problems.  Hopefully yours will be every bit as dependable.
