Welcome - I too only just recently picked up a saw, but am loving it.

Again I live in the UK also, (albeit in Wales) but not that far away...

My daughter is showing an interest and has had her first attempt on the saw, she's 10  - what I would make sure is that they are not afraid of the chatter.  Don't let it put them off, and make sure they have that all important safety brief :) 

Being able to count to ten at the end of the shift is most important :)
