General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Saw upgrade
« on: April 25, 2018, 02:11:58 pm »
I recently changed from a porter cable to a dewalt 788. Difference is like night and day. Porter cable was a decent saw but the dewalt is far better.

I wonder if I could start a "GoFundMe" page to assist me with my upgrade. It looks like I will have to stick with my PC for a while longer..

I am just curious and would like some opinions,( keep it classy) on what brand of saw I should step up to next. I currently have a Porter Cable 18", but I feel like it does not have enough distance between the top arm and the table. I do lots of cutting with it, but I have never tried any type of fretwork, or used any smaller blades other than a #5, since much of my cutting has been on 3/4 stock. I cut out a lot of name plaques, since I can usually do one in an hour or less. I think I should try stepping down to a smaller blade size and start playing around with thinner stock, since that is what has always interested me about scrolling anyway. I love to see those pieces that someone has done that has the most delicate of workings, and I hope to get that good before I get too old lol.

Any thoughts or advice is welcome.

Well, after many days of waiting, I finally got my order in of the Dewalt 788 replacement thumbscrews that have the rotating tip on them. They were not cheap, as I paid $11/each for them. They fit perfect in my Porter Cable, and after cutting with it for quite a while today, I had no slipped blades and no hockey sticks. Porter Cable should replace all of theirs with this style of thumbscrew.

Thanks for all the advice from everyone.   ;D ;D ;D ;D

Larry, the thumb screws for the 788 are the ones with the rotating tip,( I found a site that has a much better closeup.) I could not find them much cheaper, so I spent 11 bucks a piece just to basically do a test run and see if my blade clamping improves. My wife says I am hard headed, and I am almost inclined to believe her.  :P

I looked up the thumb screws for the Delta 40-694, but they do not show that they have the rotating tip, but look just like the original thumb screws for my PC. Does anyone have a link to these thumb screws ?

Thanks,

D.W.

I have been trying to find a link to order these. I will do to look up the Delta model replacement parts and see if I can find those thumb screws.

After checking on the Delta 788, it looks like those are the ones I need, now if I can find them for less than $12.63 each

Hi. My name is David. I am from Decatur, Alabama. I am not new to woodworking, just fairly new to scrolling. I have started out with a cheaper machine, and I am finding out by trial and error what my machine is lacking. As my technique improves I hope to one day move up with my machine as well.

 :)

I have read several posts about the Delta\Dewalt thumb screws that have the rotating tip, which stays stationary as you tighten the blade. I currently have the 16" Porter Cable scroll saw,( I have not saved up to move up the ladder in saws yet), and I molded 2 new screws for locking the blade in, but the originals did not have the rotating tip. I am actually looking for a better blade clamp AND screws, but I will settle for any thumb screws that might be interchangeable with mine.

Any help?
Thanks
