General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Rusty Nails
« on: June 10, 2014, 11:16:00 am »
Thank you guys, have plenty of nails to try all three, salt water, Pepsi and the vinegar.salt mix.  The nails are what I think are called tacks and they are dark blue or black color.

Thank You,

Pieter

I have heard that a solution of vinegar and salt will turn nails rusty and old looking; does this work?  If so does any one have any experience using this method?  Any suggestion as to what the best ration of salt and vinegar?

I have found that Rockler will honor their internet prices in the store.

Like the rest of you standing for a long time is hard on the back and siting on a make shift stool was not really working either.  So I splurged and bought a very comfortable adjustable height office chair.  Now my back lasts a lot longer and my legs don't cramp, and I can sit at the scroll saw as well as the adjustable height work table and feel in control of the work.

Dustin, thanks for your comments; you are confirming my opinion that there is a fine line between those "small" compressors and those "large" shop compressors.  Regarding the pin gun, I think I would agree with you that I will spend a few more bucks and get a name brand.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: A different way to sand small parts.

I have found that using a Rockler's hockey puck, those round things that hold the wood while you sand, paint, etc.  I kept on getting blooding thumbs and fingers when I was sanding 1/8" or 1/16" thick scrollsaw projects - getting blood out of wood is a pain.  After cutting I put the project on a sheet of 400 sandpaper and use the "puck" to provide stable and even pressure on the whole project.  A couple of quick circles on the paper and all is glass smooth again after the tape removal.

Sure glad I switched forums from the "Scrollsaw" one. I would love to see a review of what is needed for a pneumatic 23 guage pin gun.  I have been looking around and trying to see just how small of a tank I can get away with, and just what minimums I should be looking for in a pin gun. I would be using it just for holding pressure when gluing boxes, or essembling scrollsaw projects, or even to create stacks for stack cutting.  Would like to be able to shoot at least a 1/2" and longer pins.

Wow, thank you for the many responses; will have to check the mentioned stores online and locally.  Funny thing is Michael's sells 1/32", 1/64", and 1/8" on up, but no 1/16".

Good to be reminded of the hazards of using small magnets and kids.  Thank you for the Amazon referral.

I am looking for recommendations of where to buy (online) "good 2 sided" 1/16" Baltic Birch.  I have purchased BB from Sloan's and have been satisfied, but they no longer sell BB in that size, only Finish Birch (no explanation if it is good 1 or 2 sides) aircraft grade.  Your help will be greatly appreciated!

I have been looking for really small rare earth magnets, i.e., 1/8" or I/16" for lids on small boxes where the sides are only 1/4" or 1/8" thick.   Any suggestions?

Was checking at a Rockler store yesterday; they now offer the plunge base for the Colt palm router online for $99.  Hope to order one this year.

I ussually use some scrap wood at the bottom for almost any 1/8" bb; essentially eliminates edge splintering and for me any ways makes it easier to control the cuts.

I always tension to the max, have never had a broken blade due to tension.
