General Scroll Saw Talk / 1st Craft Show coming up - need your two cents
« on: October 13, 2013, 07:54:17 pm »
My 1st show will be next Sat.. I've set up a mock display in my basement [1 8' table]. i have a 2x4 panel at one end from my wall hanging items. A small Christmas tree w/lites at the other end. The tree is pretty full with different ornaments and I will display other variations of , say fretted crosses, around the tree bottom.  My problem is in labeling the orn. price.  I have stack cut Steve's work Angel orn. [5 pcs. 1/8 birch] and I  painted the outer ring gold. I didn't like Angel in raw birch so I painted a second gloss white with an outer gold ring. Then I left the rest unfinished. Ok help. Do I price all 3 styles differently? Do I put a pricing sticker on each of all 3 style. Opinions & experiences appreciated.

The Coffee Shop / School starting w/ this great leason
« on: August 16, 2013, 07:55:57 pm »

Back in  September 2005 on the first day of school Martha Cothren, a social studies  school teacher at Robinson High School in Little Rock did something not to be  forgotten. On the first day of school, with the permission of the school  superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she removed all of  the desks out of her classroom.

When the first period kids  entered the room they discovered that there were no desks.

'Ms.  Cothren, where are our desks?'

She replied, 'You can't have a  desk until you tell me how you earn the right to sit at a desk.'

They thought, 'Well, maybe it's our grades.'

'No,' she  said.

'Maybe it's our behavior.'

She told  them, 'No, it's not even your behavior.'

And so, they came and  went, the first period, second period, third period. Still no desks in the  classroom.

By early afternoon television news crews had started  gathering in Ms. Cothren's classroom to report about this crazy teacher who had  taken all the desks out of her room.

The final period of the  day came and as the puzzled students found seats on the floor of the desk-less  classroom, Martha Cothren said, 'Throughout the day no one has been able to tell  me just what he or she has done to earn the right to sit at the desks that are  ordinarily found in this classroom. Now I am going to tell you.'

At this point, Martha Cothren went over to the door of her classroom  and opened it.

Twenty-seven (27) U.S. Veterans, all in  uniforms, walked into that classroom, each one carrying a school desk. The Vets  began placing the school desks in rows, and then they would walk over and stand  alongside the wall. By the time the last soldier had set the final desk in place  those kids started to understand, perhaps for the first time in their lives,  just how the right to sit at those desks had been earned..

Martha said, 'You didn't earn the right to sit at these desks. These heroes did  it for you. They placed the desks here for you. Now, it's up to you to sit in  them. It is your responsibility to learn, to be good students, to be good  citizens. They paid the price so that you could have the freedom to get an  education. Don't ever forget it.'

By the way, this is a true  story. And this teacher was awarded Teacher of the Year for the state of  Arkansas in 2006.

*Please consider passing this along so others  won't forget either that the freedoms we have in this great country were earned  by U. S.Veterans. Always remember them and the rights they have won for  us.
Blessings abound in the USA !*

The Coffee Shop / Irish women & her husband
« on: August 13, 2013, 01:17:11 pm »
An Irish woman of advanced age visited her physician to ask his advice on reviving her husband?s libido.

?What about trying Viagra?? asked the doctor.

?Not a chance?, she said. ?He won?t even take an aspirin.?

?Not a problem,? replied the doctor. ?Give him an ?Irish Viagra?. It?s when you drop the Viagra tablet into his coffee. He won?t even taste it, give it a try and call me in a week to let me know how things went..?

It wasn?t a week later when she called the doctor, who directly inquired as to her progress.
The poor dear exclaimed, ?Oh, faith, bejaysus and begorrah! T?was horrid! Just terrible, doctor!?

?Really? What happened?? asked the doctor?
?Well, I did as you advised and slipped it in his coffee and the effect was almost immediate. He jumped straight up, with a twinkle in his eye and with his pants a-bulging fiercely! With one swoop of his arm, he sent me cups and tablecloth flying, ripped me clothes to tatters and took me then and there passionately on the tabletop! It was a nightmare, I tell you, an absolute nightmare!?

?Why so terrible?? asked the doctor, ? Do you mean the sex your husband provided wasn?t good??

?Freakin? jaysus, ?twas the best sex I?ve had in 25 years! But sure as I?m sittin? here, I?ll never be able to show me face in Starbucks again.

« on: June 12, 2013, 11:43:10 pm »
Thanks for all the help in finishing/saving this cutting.  I covered the Lemon Oil finish [& it's excessive smell to my wife] with Deft lacquer. It blocked 90-95% of the smell. Thanks for looking & of course suggestion appreciated.  Brian

General Scroll Saw Talk / Help-My cutting was OK BUT my finish isn't
« on: June 06, 2013, 01:33:04 pm »
Finished a nice cutting of Jesus & Joseph - did some sample staining on scraps. One of which was Lemon Oil. The color looked good on my samples & still does but the lemon oil does not want to dry/out gas [that's a problem for my wife] and it allows finish sanding marks to be exaggerated. Since the piece is 3/4" I could  re-sand but I'am sure the oil soaked in real good since a dipped the piece. Also I have a feeling my sand belts will clog easily.   Can I spray anything over the lemon oil to reduce the out gassing [for my wife]? Any ideas & help greatly appreciated.  Brian

Brag Forum / Late Heart Puzzle
« on: March 27, 2013, 12:15:09 am »
Made Steve's Heart Puzzle for my granddaughter - for Valentine's day - but didn't make the deadline. Soooo - I'll give it to her in May for her birthday.  Added a "carved" lace boarder with a bottom to keep the puzzle together. Also added a copy of the puzzle layout on the box inside - so I could put it back together.  And, oh yes, I carved a 3D Heart for the top of the small puzzle heart. The red streaks of color are just that - she likes crane art work.  Thanks for looking.

The Coffee Shop / Travel Plans
« on: February 27, 2013, 09:38:42 am »
My Travel Plans for 2013-2014 :

I have been in many places, but I've never been in Cahoots.    Apparently, you can't go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone.

I've also never been in Cognito.  I hear no one recognizes you there.

I have,  however,  been in Sane. They don't have an airport;  you have to be driven there.   I have made several trips there thanks to my children, friends, family and work.

I would like to go to Conclusions,  but you have to jump and I'm not too much on physical activity anymore.

I have also been in Doubt.  That is a sad place to go and I try not to visit there too often.

I've been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm.

Sometimes I'm in Capable and I go there more often as I'm getting older.

One of my favorite places to be is in Suspense!   It really gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart!  At my age I need all the stimuli I can get!

I may have been in Continent , but  I don't remember what country I was in.  It's an age thing.  They tell me it is very wet and damp there.

The Coffee Shop / Old Age
« on: February 22, 2013, 08:54:19 pm »
Three old golfers are walking down the fairway.

"Sixty is the worst age to be," said the 60-year-old, "You always feel like you have to pee. And most of the time nothing happens."

"Ah, that's nothing," said the 70-year-old. "When you're 70, you don't have a bowel movement anymore. You take laxatives, eat bran, you sit on the toilet all day and nothing happens."

"Actually," said the 80-year-old, "Eighty is the worst age of all."

"Do you have trouble peeing too?" asked the 60-year-old.

"No, I pee every morning at 6.00 am. I pee like a racehorse; no problem at all."

"Do you have trouble having a bowel movement?"

"No, I have one every morning at 6.30 am."

Puzzled with this the 60-year-old said, "Let's get this straight. You pee every morning at 6.00 am and poop every morning at 6.30 am. So what's so tough about being 80?"

"I don't wake up until seven.

Personally I'm approaching 70 - can't wait 'til I'm 80. I'll get to sleep in. :D

General Scroll Saw Talk / Removing patterns
« on: February 16, 2013, 05:29:43 pm »
I know I've read replies to this question before - but my search proved unsuccessful.  I've applied my pattern to a painted and sealed blank & then cutout the puzzle.  I used 77 photo mount spray with what I thought was an extended dry time before applying the pattern.
I've done this approach successfully before. The pieces are small and will take forever to scrape them clean and I'll loose some of the paint job.  Was it mineral sprites sprayed on - for how long?  I'd even use the microwave [after my wife went to bed] but again for how long?  Thanks in advance again - Brian

Brag Forum / Steve's Witch
« on: October 12, 2012, 12:03:52 am »
Took some liberties with Steve's Pattern. Gave the witch a Harvest Moon background and changed the copy style. My "a" insides kept falling out - oh well :P & my water color black was blotchy - should have sprayed the b/b black. But it was a fun quick project and I doubt if the kids will even notice - come Halloween.

The Coffee Shop / Drill Press Teck needed
« on: August 02, 2012, 11:33:50 pm »
Got a pretty nice floor standing Delta drill press I use for my entry holes.  But 98% of the time when I turn it on - the motor growns but the spindle doesn't turn.  I turn the motor off & manually turn the spindle & try to restart with some success.  But often not until I make 3-4 tries. I'd like to fix it, but I don't know how to evaluate whether it's a bent spindle shaft or a bad spot on the motor windings. Sincerely, frustrated & open to suggestions.
