General Scroll Saw Talk / Speed to wood Thickness
« on: April 12, 2011, 10:28:40 pm »
Do any of you have a rule of thumb or some sort of guideline for matching blades speed to wood thickness? Such as "I'm cutting 3/4" Red oak and I'm going to use a number 7 blade at X speed" or " I'm cutting 1/8th" Baltic Birch with a #5sr blade at X speed" It seems to me that different types of woods might cut better at different speeds, so basically how do you figure out the best speed for your saw on various thickness and types of wood? I hope that all makes sense!

Pattern Requests. / My cat pattern

This was the 1st pattern I've done that came out ok, this stuff isn't easy, makes me wonder how Grampa and the others do them so quickly and good. I've gained a lot of respect for the pattern makers at this site after doing this one.

Brag Forum / Steve's Squirrel

We have a bunch of spoiled squirrels in the back yard, that just love their peanuts. So that pattern was very appropriate for this household. I made it out of pine and some broken fence slats (I think the wood is cypress) that I had laying around.

Pattern Requests. / Pattern help please

I've been trying to make this pattern in Gimp, but I guess I'm just not good enough yet. I was hoping maybe one of the experts here could give me a hand, this is for a dear friend of mine and I'd like to make this for her upcoming b-day.

Do you guy's/gal's make your own frames or buy them? If you buy them where do you normally get them from?

Pattern Requests. / Hummingbird
« on: March 25, 2011, 07:22:02 pm »
I have a hummingbird feeder in the backyard and would like to make a hummingbird whirly bird thing where the wings spin, I just can't find a decent hummingbird outline to cut out though, can anyone help? I can figure the wings out, just need the body of the bird.

Thanks

General Scroll Saw Talk / A little help please...
« on: March 10, 2011, 01:47:24 am »
I would like to start making patterns of my own photo's as other here do. I've been searching for a program, there seems to be quite a few out there, I was wondering which ones you guys/gals recommend or use. I did just download OpenOffice Draw for normal patterns, but have yet to figure out if this program will turn a photo to a sketch.

Thanks in advance

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Broken Blower
« on: March 08, 2011, 04:01:37 pm »
I bought my saw used and the blower didn't work, the diaphragm is bad, so I found a little personal fan at Wallmart for $6.00 and this is what I ended up with. It works surprisingly well as long as your saw doesn't vibrate too much...You might want to wear an apron or a work shirt as the dust does tend to blow back on you.

I'm Bob from Lakeland, Fl. This scroll saw thing started as a whim for me early last week, I was cruising Craig's list and found a scroll saw for $10.00, so I figured what the heck, I like tools and even if it doesn't work, it's only 10 bucks. I bought some box store blades, took it home, cleaned it up a little and was very surprised at how well it worked, very little vibration. So I started my education of scroll sawing and came upon Steve's blog, WOW what a find! Little did I know this little whim I had would turn into a new love, I can't stay away from the darned thing now, and with Steve's help my learning curve has been expedited to warp drive. I've already completed a few of Steve's pattern with what I consider good results even handicapped with inferior blades (Waiting on my Flying Dutchman's).

I want to thank Steve for making this new adventure so much easier and enjoyable and it also appears I have a new neighbor in Russ C, same neck of the woods.
