Pattern Requests. / Classic car patterns
« on: October 24, 2011, 09:53:54 pm »
Hi guys, I am going to do a show at a classic cars event on the 12th of November I want to make a bunch of classic car plaques and I simply don't have time to make a bunch of patterns. If any of you have patterns of classic cars, don't really care what they are, please pass them along. Thanks in advance.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Book Review...Simply Wood
« on: September 29, 2011, 01:00:41 pm »
by Roshaan Ganief

I ordered this book from Amazon and received it a couple days ago, I'm not one to review books very often, however I really like the patterns and style that Roshaan presents in her book and thought I would share it with you.

I have nothing to do with the Author and do not know her, I simply like her book. She has a unique style that is simple, clean and elegant which I find very attractive. Some of her patterns are very simple, some are more advanced, but even the advanced ones are not that difficult. I have not made any of her projects yet, but I plan to in the near future, time has been an issue for me lately.

My only beef with the book is that copying or scanning the patterns can be a challenge with out first cutting the page out of the book, which is something I'm not fond of doing. I wish there was a way to get her patterns digitally.

Overall, I feel the money spent was well worth it, and I can't wait to start turning her patterns into wood. Here's the link if you are interested.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Bloody wood
« on: August 03, 2011, 10:52:56 pm »
I was finish sanding by hand a piece of Maple, when I turned it over to do the other side, it was covered in my blood. I somehow nicked my finger with out knowing it, then the panic started. Trust me when I say, blood and maple don't mix, I tried wiping the blood off the maple with water and a towel only to smear it and make it worse. I then remembered that hydrogen peroxide takes blood out of clothes and was hoping it would work on wood also, so I ran into the house grabbed a bottle and poured it on the effected area's of the maple....worked like a charm! I did that a couple times and the maple is back to looking as pretty as it did before the near fatal accident. Then I got a band-aide for my finger. I thought I would pass this along since we all work with sharp things and stuff does happen, thankfully I was able to save the patient this time.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Finishing Question...
« on: May 18, 2011, 10:38:37 pm »
I normally don't stain my projects, but on this particular project I am using a dark stain, I usually just do a 50/50 mix of BLO and Mineral Spirits. So my question is... After staining, is it still necessary to do the Blo/MS step? I will be spraying with lacquer to finish off the project.

TIA

Bob

PS. It's an oil based stain.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Sloan's Plywood
« on: May 07, 2011, 06:20:10 pm »
I know a lot of people here get their BB from Sloan's, I'm curious about the other plywoods they sell such as the Walnut, Maple, Mahogany ect.

Has anyone used them? How well do the other plywoods work for scroll saw projects and how well do they cut? Is it a good value at Sloans or are there other outlets? Would it be better to just buy the hardwood even though it can be difficult to find in thin pieces (I don't have a planer yet).  Any input is appreciated.

Pattern Requests. / To the Pattern Makers here...
« on: May 02, 2011, 02:57:19 pm »
A suggestion. Maybe when someone needs a pattern, one of us can "Call It" so that others don't spend time on the same thing. A simple "I got it" post or something to that effect to let the other pattern makers know that someone is already working on it. As we all know it takes a lot of time and effort to make a pattern, and more than one usually isn't necessary.

For instance Scollroger has a really cute dog up, I'm reluctant to start on it for fear that someone else is already doing it. Plus, I just have had no success so far with dog's, I know you guys are much better than me at dogs.

Let me know if this is a good suggestion or not.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Zero clearance insert-Kinda
« on: April 23, 2011, 01:38:59 am »
I was cutting some small individual letters and had a problem with the blade clearance and getting a decent cut. Since my saw will not allow for a normal type of zero clearance insert, and I was desperate, I took a piece of plywood sanded it down to 320 grit and waxed and buffed it a couple times. Then I put it on the saw cut a slit down it and my probs were solved. It waxed up really nicely to where I think it is actually smoother than the saws table. I just hold it on with a couple clamps that remove easily. An added benefit is that when my blade starts to get dull during normal use, instead of changing the blade I slap the insert on and now I have fresh teeth from the same blade cus it sits higher. Not suggesting this for anyone else, but it works for me and I thought it was kinda cool.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Taking Pictures
« on: April 20, 2011, 03:33:52 pm »
I've noticed some of you take really beautiful pictures of your work. I'm pretty good with a camera and photo editing software, but it seems to take me forever to get a picture that I like for show casing my work. Any tips, tricks or techniques about how you set up to take them would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Bob

PS. Actually that bottle has been floating around here for quite awhile, empty, it was just something to take test pics with.
