Intarsia / Not sure if this is Intarsia or not?
« on: July 19, 2012, 06:42:01 pm »
Looking at all the really cool Intarsia that Al and all the others have posted here gave me the bug to try it. I've been wanting to try it for a while, just didn't think I had the abilities yet. I bought Kathy Wise's Intarsia book and found a very simple train to try out, plus my Nephews B-Day is at the end of the month so I figured if I screwed it up, he wouldn't care too much, he's gonna be two! Now that I'm done with it, I realize there is soo much I should have done differently, choice of wood is one of them. I used Blue Pine, Maple, Walnut, Bloodwood, Purple Heart and White Oak. The Blue pine just didn't give me the look I was hoping for, but it is what it is at this point.

I really don't think this is Intarsia, but it did come out of an Intarsia book, so not sure what to call it. I will say that once I started on it, it was hard to stop. It really was a fun project and now I've really got the bug and will soon try another one of Kathy's patterns till I get to the point that I can make my own.

General Scroll Saw Talk / My new EX21 arrived today
« on: July 13, 2012, 06:26:53 pm »
Got it all set up and have been cutting, I still have a few minor adjustments but overall this saw is what I expected it to be. Don't wanna do a whole write up here about it I have already put one on my blog. If you want to see the saw just go to http://www.scroll-saw-forum.com.

I really cant get over how quite this saw is, my old saw was pretty quite, but this one makes me wonder sometimes if it's actually on! It came pretty much ready to cut out of the box thanks to Seyco's make ready program, it even had a decent blade already installed! I seriously could not be Happier with the folks over at Seyco, and I also need to thank Sheila Landry (Scroll Girl) for taking time out of her busy day to actually call me on the phone and talk about this saw with me before I actually bought it.

When I ordered the saw, I knew the shipping and stand came with it, I ordered a foot switch separately, when I recieved the invoice the foot switch was included with the saw, that was a very nice and unexpected perk from Seyco. I even called them to make sure it wasn't a mistake, they told me that the foot switch indeed does comes with it. Guess I just didn't see that.

Anyway, I am happy so far which is much better than the experience I had with the Delta 40-695 that I had to return.

With the latest version of Adobe Reader, you can now easily resize any of Steve's Patterns. In order to do this you will need the latest version of Adobe Reader, you can get it here www.adobe.com/products/reader.html and it's still free. Once updated simply right click on any of Steve's patterns, go to print, and it will bring a print window up with a poster button. It's pretty self explanatory, but I have made a simple tutorial to make it easier. You will be able to increase or decrease sizes till your hearts content. Hope this helps.

(Update 1/31/13)
Adobe has updated their reader again, it is now ver. XI. But it is no different from the prior version. The link above will take you to the even later version. I have also made a video about this and it also includes how to re-size patterns from books and magazines. Here is the link. www.scroll-saw-forum.com/2013/01/how-to-re-size-patterns_31.html

General Scroll Saw Talk / I Need Your Opinion Please....
« on: May 22, 2012, 04:19:06 pm »
I've been making this Marilyn Monroe Desk Plaque, Statue, Sculpture, not really sure what to call it. But the real issue being debated in my household is "Should it be on the base, or just the grid?" Personally I'm leaning towards the base, but not committed to that opinion yet, I do see the other argument too. It's not finished yet, the base in the picture is not permanently attached. So what do you think, which way does it look better? And while I got ya, what term would you use to describe it?

Thanks for your help!

Bob

PS...Thanks to Big Pete for the inspiration of this project.

Brag Forum / One More Portrait
« on: May 14, 2012, 10:44:51 pm »
Just finished cutting this one today. The couple just got engaged and they love their wine tasting weekends together. Cut this one out of Baltic Birch Ply 1/8" and used FDUR 1 blades. This one was fun to cut, but found myself drinking more than the usual amount of beer while doing it?? Showing original pic, my pattern and the finished cutting. It is 10"x 14" and still need to frame it. Thanks for looking.

Just finished this one up, thought it came out pretty good, but by far not my best portrait. The Grandma who received it loved it, guess that's all that matters. Cut out of 1/8"BB, using FDUR 1's and 3's. Showing original pic, my pattern, finished piece.

The Coffee Shop / I need to Thank, DGman, Marmoh, RussC and Steve.
« on: March 14, 2012, 04:16:41 pm »
Some of you already know that I was invited to be a vendor at this years Lakeland Fl. Airshow starting Mach 27th, to show and sell my scroll saw work. This is an annual show that Features The US Air Forces Thunderbirds acrobatic air team. The show typically brings in an attendance of 200,000 to 300,00 people every year and last for six days. Preparing for a show like this can be overwhelming to a guy that just makes stuff in his garage.

This is where the Thank You's come in. I have had an enormous amount of help to prepare from Marion (Marmoh) and Dan (DGman), without their help I probably would have backed out of this event for the simple reason I would not have enough items to show and sell at the event.

Marion has made and shipped me over 170 items of jewelry, bowls and other things which is simply amazing, especially from some one I have yet to meet face to face. Dan has cut many projects for me as well and has also supplied items that he had previously made, that I will take to the show, again never having personally met.

Neither one of them are very good at tooting their own horn, so I'm going to do it for them! Not only have they supplied me with lots of stuff, the quality is amazing, stuff I am extremely proud to have at my tables. I have pictures on my face book page and I also list some of their items on my website So if you would like to see some of the awesome work they do please check the links in my signature below.

RussC (Our Moderator) has also joined the efforts to help supply items for the airshow, it's a lot easier since he lives a mile or two away from me, Russ will also join me at the show to help out. It will be very nice to have another scrollers experience at the show and I'm looking forward to having him there. Thanks Russ for the perfect 45's!

As for Steve, None of this would have happened had it not been for his selflessness in being willing to share his Hobby, his Knowledge and his time to allow others like myself to reap the benefits. Through Steve, I have made new friendships, started a fledgling business and even have a new "Mom" which is solely due to Steve and this forum. I simply can't express my gratitude to him enough with mere word's.

I apologize for this post being so long, but to me, it was necessary.

The Coffee Shop / Congrats to Marmoh, On the birth of her new Son!!
« on: March 14, 2012, 01:41:09 pm »
Sometime in the recent past, Marmoh (Marion) gave birth to  a bouncing baby boy. At 6' long and weighing 215 pounds, I imagine it was quite a struggle for her. Though the name she came up with is a bit odd, she named him TripleB.

Her new son, amazingly, could already talk and type post on the internet at birth, so she didn't have to spend much money educating him. However, just like any mom, she constantly shares her knowledge, guides him and comforts him in those times of need, and even performs the occasional rescue.

TripleB could have never asked for a better mother and friend, and will try his best to remain the loving son she brought into this world.

Thanks for being my new "Mom", Mom!

Grampa posted this really cool F16 pattern in the patterns section, I just made a stand for it. It's made out of 3/4" Mahogany and oiled 50/50. Not sure yet if I'll give it a coat of lacquer or not, cus it's just so darn pretty as is!

Thanks Paul for the pattern.

I have been invited to be a vendor at our local Airshow in March, I thought these would be appropriate for the show. Thanks Steve for the great patterns.

The Cessna Clock is 3/4" Mahogany, The P51 Mustang is, I think, some variety of Mahogany, but not sure. Both finished with BLO mix and Lacquer.

Brag Forum / Another "Courage" Plaque
« on: December 07, 2011, 11:44:50 pm »
Finally got around to cutting this one and thought I'd show it off. I don't know who Daniel Hart is, but his name is on the pattern, and would like to thank him for such a wonderful pattern. And also thanks to the person who posted it on this board, sorry, I don't remember who it was.

The pattern is cut out of Maple plywood from Ochooch and the backer is 3/4" Walnut flooring that I re-purposed. I have to say this pattern was a lot more challenging to cut then I thought it wood be, and took me about three hours to cut, which is two hours longer then I expected, but I think it was worth it. My intention was to give it as a gift, but I think I'm gonna have to keep this one, and make some more.

This was fun, thanks to Steve for the great pattern. The fuselage and wheels are Walnut the wings and tail are Maple, oiled in Blo mix and gave it a couple coats of Shelac.

The "Peace on Earth" sign is a pattern from Scroll Saw Woodworking and Crafts holiday issue. The Peace is 3/4" Mahogany the "On Earth" is Maple. Same finish as above.

General Scroll Saw Talk / What kind of wood is this?
« on: December 02, 2011, 03:38:20 pm »
I received 2 of these pieces of wood (8" wide 8' long x 3/4" thick) The guy who gave it to me didn't know what it is, I'm not sure either. So I thought I'd ask the pro's! I did sand a little bit and oil it for the picture.
Thanks,
Bob

Decided to make our Mailman a gift this year instead of the usual gift card. Came up with these patterns and thought some of you might want to use them as well.
