Brag Forum / A commisioned portrait
« on: April 17, 2015, 05:32:46 pm »
Cutting is 1/8" BB 8"x10", Frame is Phillipinian (sp?) Mahogany (Mahogany from the Phillipean's...lol) with a Poplar inlay.

Finish-Sprayed with four coats of lacquer, rubbed only the last coat with a paper bag, and since a light color wood was used, I did not use oil.

The couple is engaged to be married, this is a wedding gift.

I converted the picture to a pattern using, Gimp and Inkscpe.

Hope you like it

General Scroll Saw Talk / Basic Intarsia Video Series
« on: February 16, 2014, 07:41:27 pm »
Hi All,

Al (Intarsia92) has been a huge inspiration to me, the Intarsia that he post on the Intarsia board is always stunning. The big problem though was, it always intimidated me, and kept me from trying Intarsia because I knew I could never do it as well as he does. Than it dawned on me one day "I don't need to do it as good as Al, I just need to do it!". I started emailing Al and picking his brain and he was always willing to share his knowledge with me, which I can never thank him enough for.

I took his advice and fit it into my way of doing things (and the tools I had available) and finally came up with a hybrid Al/ Bob version of making intarsia. Even though I will still never be able to create Intarsia pieces like Al does, I'm comfortable with what I do make.

A year ago I started making some videos of the hybrid process, but never finished them, recently I watched them again and said what the heck. I finished them and thought I would share them with you. I made it 6 parts because there is a lot of info to go over, and I guess sometimes I can get a bit long winded. Hopefully, after watching the videos, some of you will try Intarsia that might not have before. I will warn you though, once you try it, it's hard to stop.

Here is the link to the full playlist of all the videos, I would highly suggest a good stiff drink before watching them though! :) Oh...almost forgot, there is a pattern of the Sea Shell if you would like to make one here: http://www.scroll-saw-forum.com/2014/02/make-basic-intarsia-sea-shell-scroll.html

I just completed a set of two video's to help out the newbies to scroll sawing. The video series includes a printable "Cutting Guide" that can be used for practice cutting and covers most of the different types of cuts that will be performed on a scroll saw.

Part 1 goes over the basics of pattern application, wood preparation and some insight on how to drill straight holes as well as preventing tear out during the drilling process. I recommend that everyone watch the part on preventing tear out while drilling.

Part 2 is much more hands on, and shows actual cutting of the practice guide with tips and tricks on how to handle the different types of cuts that newbie scrollers will be faced with. Some of you vets might even pick something up.

As with every thing, there are multiple ways to do things, these videos show the way's that have worked for me and should be a good starting point for beginners. For example, there are many ways to apply patterns, I'm simply showing the way I do it because it would take too much video to show other options. This doesn't mean it is the only way to do it, it's just the method I choose so feel free to look into other methods as well.

I can't post the video here so here's a link to my blog so you can view them.

After seeing the "Pooping Reindeer" that Melster posted I decided to give making something similar an attempt. This still has a few little details to work out, but those will be taken care of before I make the final piece. I also made a quick little video of it showing it working.

You can view the video here.   http://www.scroll-saw-forum.com/2013/02/pooping-puppy.html

I had a discussion with a friend today about easy ways to align your scroll saw blade to the table. Surprisingly, It was a lot more difficult to explain than I thought it would be, so I figured I'd just make a quick video and show the process instead. This process is nothing new, but I'm sure there are a few out there that might not know how to do it this way so I wanted to show you as well, just in case!

Here's the link.

I posted this on the Intarsia link, but I don't think many people go there, so I thought I would post it here as well.

Used nine different woods, Wenge, Maple, Blood wood, Walnut, Aspen,Poplar, Purple Heart, Bubinga and Red Cedar.
It?s finished with five coats of Deft Semi Gloss Lacquer and I in-layed a penny on the back for dating the year made. (Intarsia92's Idea) It is 16" in diameter.

The pattern is by Judy Gale Roberts.

Brag Forum / I made a Boo Boo!
« on: August 07, 2012, 08:26:12 pm »
I recently purchased some patterns from Sheila Landry Designs and was very anxious to start cutting them out, perhaps a bit too anxious! One of the patterns I bought from her was the self framing Sun n' Moon pattern (Not sure that's what she calls it, but it is what I call it). And in my excitement of making the pattern I guess I had what you would call a "Brain Fart". If I had followed the many pages of instruction that Sheila includes with her patterns, I probably would not have messed up, but I didn't, and yes I did mess up! I cut the bevel in the wrong direction on the wood that was supposed to inset the face. It was supposed to be an inny, but ended up being an outy when compared to belly buttons.

Such a dilemma, I didn't want to throw away a perfectly good piece of Maple hard wood, so I just started playing with what I had and came up with the following. I cut the face out added a couple risers to the back and made the face an outy instead of an inny and got the router out.

I honestly think it came out really nice, sometimes even a Brain Fart can be good!

Intarsia / Santa Bear Intarsia
« on: July 30, 2012, 11:03:13 pm »
This is my first real attempt at Intarsia, the pattern is by Judy Gale Roberts. I really enjoyed making this, and probably as a surprise to most, I actually liked doing the shaping process. I have learned a lot doing this, mostly what not to do, so the next one should go a lot smoother, Hopefully!

Wood's used, Bloodwood, Butternut, Cherry, Alaskan Yellow Cedar, Aspen, Walnut and Poplar dowels for the eyes.

I need to thank Al (Intarsia92) for his help through this process. All comments are welcomed, hope you like it.

Brag Forum / Expermenting with Overlays
« on: July 21, 2012, 05:14:24 pm »
Marion (Marmoh) and I have been experimenting with overlayed fretwork. The Tiger pattern was originally made by Grampa (Paul), Pabreu, over at free4allscrollsawpatterns,made the Cowgirl pattern. I redesigned the patterns a bit to be able to cut the overlays out separately, Marion did the actual work of cutting and completing the projects.

We both would love to hear what you guy's and gal's think about this concept of overlaying shaped pieces on to an existing fretwork pattern.

Thanks
Marion and Bob

I know it's still a bit early, it is rather weird working on Christmas items when it's 104 degree's in my shop but I'm gonna be prepared this year!
I stack cut 3 of these and already have them allocated as gifts to family members. They are cut out of 1/8" Baltic Birch Ply and I used FDUR 1's and 3's to cut it. The frame is just a store bought frame I had lying around, even though I think it does look good in the frame, I still might go ahead and make one instead, haven't really decided yet.

Merry Christmas! ;)
