Brag Forum / Gabby Finally Appears LOL
« on: March 22, 2011, 08:53:20 pm »
Hallelujah!!!!!
The weather finally cooperated and I was able to do some cutting.
I designed a Wine tender, if you have ever had a bottle partly used and stored in the fridge, with a hole in the cork, it probably leaked. This is designed to hold the top elevated so that won't happen. And it won't take up valuable space while it's doing that.
It isn't much really I realise that. but it is my FIRST!! The decoration is a grape leaf.

Pattern Requests. / Looking for a special Moose pattern
« on: March 17, 2011, 11:43:01 pm »
My friends and neighbor's Daughter is getting married in May. She has a special thing for Moose of any kind. I would like to cut something for them as a wedding gift. It will need to be simple as you all know I've barely started out scroll sawing.
I had an idea along the lines of how the female of the species rules the roost, so something cartoon comic would be appropriate I think, featuring both genders if possible.
Thanks in advance,
Gabby

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Velvet lining
« on: March 14, 2011, 12:24:59 am »
Does anyone have any experience or tips for lining jewelery boxes and such with velvet or satin, like they used to do with fancy pistols or watches ETC.
Gabby

Diver & GB, I'm really looking for the velvet or satin. Saw the demo for the flocking, and felt won't cut it either but may be what I end up with.
I just don't feel they are classy enough for something that is supposed to be for presentation or display
Thanks anyway.

The Coffee Shop / About me.
« on: March 08, 2011, 04:20:41 pm »
Just a little background history of an old fart.
Back in the late 1960's after serving 4 years in the US Navy. I returned to my home state of AZ. In 1970 I joined the local police department, the part about my job I liked most was helping people out when I could, I had parents stop me on the street to thank me for setting their straying kids straight, on several occasions I stopped teenagers and found alcohol in their vehicles, rather than arrest them I would make them pour it out in the street and send them home. It was a small town so they couldn't hide from me. I never did it for the thanks. If a mother was being abused by her husband or leaving herself open to bad things I would caution them. Quite often I never heard from them but I did notice they had changed their situation. That was thanks enough. I left law enforcement after getting on the wrong side of a crooked Chief of Police, and had to leave AZ in order to find a job. Finally after a time I returned and was able to get my life back together, even worked as a security officer for a time, but finally ended up as a heavy equipment operator, which was a job I loved, something about the challenge of overcoming difficult situations, making that machine do what was necessary and getting the job done.
I have 3 daughters that have made me a grandfather to 5 girls and 2 boys. I'm proud of them all. I love a good joke and sharing them with friends whether it's here on this forum or with the other old geezers at the croaker club, senior center for those who don't know what I'm talking about. So now maybe you know what makes me tick somewhat. I'm limited to very little travel due to a health problem, but still enjoy interacting with people and if possible imparting some of my knowledge picked up in 68 years of life. There isn't much more I can do for my extended family
including those who are total strangers here in cyber space.
I think it was Mr Spock who said, "Live Long and Prosper".

Ask Steve a question. / Videos on blog
« on: February 17, 2011, 10:07:07 pm »
Hi Steve I was just back trying to review some of your instructional videos. I found it frustrating to locate each step of 2 or more parts describing a project. Is there any way you can get them to follow each other on you tube? Sure would be easier to find and view. A table of contents would be good too if that is possible. I have no idea how those pages are set up.
Thanks,
Gabby

The Coffee Shop / Saw blade condition or is this normal?
« on: February 06, 2011, 06:47:15 pm »
I decided to go out and make some practice cuts, and get a little time on the saw. It was overcast and chilly but I decided to tough it out. { For those who don't know I've set up in my carport open to the wind. I do have a shop / storage building but it is 300 ft. from power. I won't go into what all brought that situation into being. Suffice it to say lack of foresight. }
About 10 minutes later the overcast was gone!
I had great lighting conditions and proceeded to practice making straight cuts and a few 90 degree turns, and checking to see how well the 2 pieces of wood matched up after the cut was complete. my wavy lines matched pretty good but the more angular cuts not so much. I decided to practice some straight lines on a piece of clear pine 1/2 x 3 x 4 inches. here is where my questions will start. I made a cut across the narrow part first cutting out a glue line just to see what would happen. that wasn't too bad, so I proceeded to do the same to the other end which had been broken of and was splintery. So I laid out a straight line to square up the end. Both of these cuts were rip cuts with the grain. I noticed the blade didn't really want to cut at the start going into end grain. I'd been noticing a little curl of wood in front of the blade and wondered if that is an indication that the blade may be getting dull??
After making the cut  which came out fairly straight.  :) I cut all but about an inch from one direction, and finished that up from the opposite just to see how close I could get doing it that way. The longer part of the cut was ragged on one side of the material as though it was tearing  the grain rather than a smooth cut, and the opposite sidewas relatively smooth, the short  part that I back cut was much smoother on one side  and the other not as badly torn as on the long part of the cut.
All this long winded dissertation is to set up to ask the question. Are all these signs  indications of a dull blade, a too loosely attached blade, or technique of feeding the material into the saw. I'm counting on you experienced people to set me straight. See what happens when a newbie O.F.gets a saw?   ::)
Last comment 2 hours vanished like smoke, I only quit because my fingers were getting a little numb!  ;D
Thanks in advance,
Gabby

The Coffee Shop / Christmas in February
« on: February 05, 2011, 10:43:19 pm »
Hi guys and gals, I got a saw today. A Delta 40-540, in excellent condition from a benevolent gentleman here on the forum. I am not going to spread his name around in order not to embarrass him. He and I know who he is.
I'll say this, he would not respond to my attempt to pay him for the saw or even the shipping. Except to say use it for lumber to build a stand. He has my gratitude for that, as I'm on a limited budget living on SS and my wife's pension, otherwise you would be seeing me under a bridge or carrying a back pack down the road. This man went out of his way to help another, I have him to thank and God as well.

I discovered right away that I'm going to have to make a lot of little scraps out of big ones to get the hang of it. I had an inspectors lamp with a powerful four inch lens, that I clamped to the table, and the special circular fluorescent light even worked! With it I could stand up and still see clearly what I was or wasn't doing (like keeping on the line LOL). I'll be ordering the assortment pack of Flying Dutchman blades asap, to see what all the cheering is about. I was furnished a half dozen blades with the saw. I was planning on trying the ones available at our local lumber yard, but I think I'll save my money and go for the best according to all the pro's here on the forum. So look out for old Fuzzy Face, he'll be bugging y'all for advice and generally getting in your hair, and in the way. Well back to snooping the site, looking for good advice and patterns and such for when I can really do this work or play, depends on your point of view.
Thanks for listening to this old wind bag. And keep in mind there really are some extremely NICE people out there.

Ask Steve a question. / Entry level saw
« on: January 30, 2011, 03:57:12 am »
Steve do you have any information, pro or con on the Craftsman 16'' Variable Speed Scroll Saw model (21602) it's on sale now for  $107 which is about all I can afford. Any others you have heard good things about in this price range? Are any from the sites like grizzly or harbour freight any good. A lathe I bought from HF was junk, so I'm kind of shy of their products.
