Good tutorial...and interesting project. Not sure if I will ever need to make a shell. But if ever I do I will have to use this idea. Thanks for sharing, even if I dont think I will use something, I love seeing what other ppl do and how they do it.

a lot of good suggestions here. Thanks. I was using a plastic pick from floss pick kit. I also use that to move small pieces of wood out the the way of blade.

That is so cool to me when you can take a picture and just make it into a cut out that looks exactly like the picture. Very nice work, really inspires me for future projects.

That puzzle box is terrific! I would love to know how to make such a box. Im sure your family and friends are amazed by it. Love the bowl too. I am a lathe person and never dreamed a bowl could be so wonderfully made without a lathe. Now that I am a scroll saw person to (or becoming one) I look forward to making some unique bowls. Thanks for telling what kind of finish you used. The maid sign....well it is nice....but kind of scary that the maid might not answer. lol that is the problem since we dont have a maid. Well thanks for sharing. Loved seeing your projects.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Do you ever....

Well I deliver Hospice Meds for a living. There is a store near the pharmacy. On the way back from my rounds I stop in a few times a week to look....and perhaps buy. You should see look on my boss' face when I come in with box of wood pieces and a foot or two of wood. He has seen my projects now so he is used to it.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Do you ever....

...find yourself in a lumber store browsing for wood and you dont even have a project in mind? Lol...if anyone told me a year ago that I would be doing just that I would have thought you were crazy. On my lunch break I can get to a Woodworkers Source store. Well today I left with a nice piece of purple heart and a piece of soft maple. The pile of wood is growing larger at my house. Now I just need time to use some of this wood to make some nice things. Thanks Steve for giving us so many free plans to use.  :)

Intarsia / Re: The wine cork holder

What a fantastic way to show off your cork collection. This piece is so wonderfully done you can look at it for a long time and just enjoy every moment of it. It is funny how my eyes started in the center with the picture and then the joy of finding the frame is made of actual corks from bottles. Then after looking at all the kind of corks you have I enjoyed looking at the fine detail of the picture all over again. Good work and a very nice project. I am sure many of your family and friends will love seeing that on your wall. Thanks for sharing.

You are really moving along fine on your work. I keep watching what you are making and thinking how much I cant wait to start my first project for intarsia. Hard to find time to start it when I work 2 jobs, but until I get the time I enjoy seeing your projects as you finish them. Thanks for sharing your beautiful work.

yes, they are a great place to buy wood! Another site to buy wood is   www.ocoochhardwoods.com

Yes, very nice site. I like the way you can select the thickness and/or width. I will have to do a purchase with them and see how good they are. Thanks for this info.

What kind of saw have you got? some take both sorts of blades.

It also helps a lot to add weight to the stand and therefor to the saw. Pave stones are pretty neat, a bucket of sand can also be enough.

Well, since my wife and I are on a tight budget and I have never really done much for woodworking before, we got a very affordable saw. That is a nice way of saying, we got something cheap and probably the reason it isnt as good as what most you use. The saw is from Harbor Freight. It only uses pin blades. I dont know if it can get an adapter and not sure how to find out.

A lot of you are giving some good advice. Perhaps I need to slow my speed down and cut a bit slower. Maybe that is part of my problem. Until I learn better it is hard for me to know when to use a faster speed and when not to. I guess for harder wood I need to use a slower speed and cut much slower?

If anyone knows a decent saw to upgrade to that doesnt cost a fortune please let me know. I enjoy working with my saw well enough that in this next year I might save up for a better saw. Until then I will be happy with the one I have and make beautiful things the best I can.  :)

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Where to buy wood
« on: June 13, 2012, 03:47:30 am »
I am about to start an intarsia project. I posted my project on that forum and asked people for advice. Some suggested I do the water with Blue Pine. Well, finding Blue Pine was not so easy at first, then I found this web site: http://thehandsomewoodman.com .  I have not bought from them yet, but from what I can tell they are an awesome site to get wood from for scroll saw projects. You pick the actual piece of wood and they send it to you.  Just sharing info I learn as a I go.

You all are awesome. I loved seeing it on the door of the person who shared it with me. I deliver hospice meds and the man who had made the one in the picture was a patient of mine. Now I know and can make one of my own. Thanks all.
