General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: sticky situation
« on: September 20, 2018, 01:33:49 pm »
The question is not whether the glue will accept stain. It's the problem of how it accepts it and the difference in color or shading that will occur. I have had problems in the past where even after wiping the stain away with a wet cloth, there was still a very thin residue left behind in the pores of the wood and it showed up when staining. It took the stain but the color difference was very obvious.

This may be too simplistic but it could also be brought on by vibration from the saw itself. I hope you keep us all updated on how things change.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: New Dust Collector / Ex-16

That looks like a great unit. In my small shop I have a dedicated vac for my scroll saw and I picked up a Rigid shop vac that I use for my portable table saw and to clean up the floor. I'm going to make a cyclone catcher for the dust for the shop vac to keep the filter cost down. The whole problem is everything takes up space and I'm very limited. Good luck with your new vac.

A very interesting concept and actually very simple. I wonder why none of the scrollsaw mfgrs. have picked up on this.

Well, there must a good reason that folks prefer to hang out where the action is. There are 3 main scroll saw forums but really only one that has much traffic. I do see many folks who post on all 3 but with the huge following that Steve has on his blog, I'd think this one would be the place of choice. I check in here and I see that the posts that I did will be the last ones for days on end. Oh well, just thought I'd ask.

Computer questions / Re: Computer Problems

Another problem that many users don't understand is how many programs are loading at start-up. Other than your security software, you really don't need anything loading right at start-up. You can open the software programs that you need and then close them when you are finished. On my machine, I keep my anti-virus, a firewall program, a password keeper, my printer/scanner utility and the necessary programs to control my internet/network systems. That's it. Nothing more is needed. People have a way of trying new free software that self-installs and forces it's way onto the startup folder/taskbar. Clean all that stuff up. Go into the control panel and see what programs are on your computer and UNINSTALL the ones that you don't use. That will make a much better working environment and speed things up.

Computer questions / Re: Computer Problems

I have read through all the answers and nobody that I saw recommended adding RAM. I have a Win 10 machine that my neighbor took to Best Buy. They convinced her that it was beyond saving and sold her a new machine. She did keep her hard drive. I managed to get her old computer. It's an Acer with the Intel I-3 chip. I bought two identical 1 tb drives and added enough memory to bring it to the max 16 gig. This little machine that was "dead" is the fastest machine I have ever had. I've got a Toshiba laptop running the I-7 chip and it is slower than my desktop. I have always thought that something is wrong with it but haven't gone into it yet. It's been about 4 years so I'm not in any hurry. Anyway, the info above is all pretty good but it is still a good idea to max out the RAM.

I sure would like to see more activity on this forum. Steve has worked hard to develop this site but I don't see much interest lately. I see the same unanswered questions just sitting there waiting. The other scroll saw site I mainly hang out at is very busy all the time. I wonder what the difference might be. I can ask a question there and have an answer within the hour generally. Not so here. And this should be the busy place what with all that Steve has to offer. Very curious.

Any possibility of you posting a pic or two of what exactly is broken and where? I might be able to lead you through a fix but I need to know exactly what is broken.

Don, I tried to post one of my .pdf's but the file is too big so I keep getting an error message. I can't figure out how to reduce the size of the file. It's easy with a .jpg but not a .pdf I find. If you can suggest how to go about it or send me your email address in a private message, I will gladly accept your help.

Well, thanks to all of you who took the time to answer me. I am still mystified as to the different types of .pdf files but I'll just have to live with it. I have also tried doing the trace bitmap thing but that hasn't worked out well either. I'm sort of dense I guess. What I really need is to have one of you smarter folks sitting right next to me and show me what it is I'm missing. Or doing wrong. Or ????

I have been pulling my hair out over this. I have a great book that has many projects in it that I want to make. The problem is when I scan the pattern pages and save them as .pdf files I can't seem to make the workable with Inkscape or any other program for that matter. If I take one of Steve Goods patterns and import it into Inkscape, I can then do pretty much anything I want to with it. The page I'm working with right now has 3 pieces on the same pattern page and when I try to import the scanned image into Inkscape and then "ungroup" it, I can get nowhere. Can anybody help me to understand what I am either doing wrong and not doing? What is the difference between the two .pdf files?

It's easy to post a picture. Just below this reply window there is a down arrow to click on called "attachments and other options". Just click on that and it will give you the "choose file" option. Make sure you know where your picture is located on your computer. Click on the file or files and that's it.
