General Scroll Saw Talk / backup for 1/8' baltic birch
« on: March 04, 2014, 09:36:37 am »
I have a special order for an anniversary present. I am cutting it out of 1/8 BB.
Since it is a custom piece I only need one piece cut of BB. What do you use to back it up such as scrap wood that you throw away after the cut?

Brag Forum / Got my Sisters Christmas presents done today
« on: December 11, 2013, 10:52:00 pm »
I made three of these for my Sisters for Christmas. I know there a lot of mistakes and miscuts in them but I hope they won't notice. HA HA

I have a lot to learn and need lots of practice. Hope to get a better quality saw soon.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Question about my finish on projects
« on: December 11, 2013, 02:09:14 pm »
I put spar varnish on my projects with brush but there are some small places i can't get to with brush. I was in town and found a can of Helsman spray urethane. Would it work to spray that over the varnish to cover everything.
Thanks

General Scroll Saw Talk / I have found a couple saws on CL
« on: December 08, 2013, 07:49:24 pm »
First I apologize for posting so much here lately. I am an old fart like a kid with new toy with this scroll saw thing.
I am looking to get a different saw I really enjoy this scrolling. I found a couple of RBI  and 1 Excalibur saw on CL
They are within a 100 or so dollars of each other in price.
Is one better or are they both good saws? I really want one with very little vibration because I would like to try some more detailed fret work after I get some experience.
Thanks,

General Scroll Saw Talk / Is there anyone?

I was wondering if there is anyone near Mt. Home, AR that is scroller? I am trying to learn how to properly drill and cut patterns. I have a lot of questions and sure could use some help.

If someone would be willing to meet with me and teach some tricks to the trade I would sure appreciate it.

Thanks,
George

General Scroll Saw Talk / Doggone the inevitable happened.
« on: December 05, 2013, 05:59:18 pm »
About 4 hrs. into my second stack of those hummingbird patterns a big chunk of the inside cut of the flower broke out. The craftsman saw I have sure seems to vibrate a lot. Does anyone else have a problem with craftsman saws?

I think that contributed to the breakage. I might be able to go ahead and salvage them but they won't look as good as it is supposed to.

Oh well, I have a lot to learn about scrolling but I love it!

General Scroll Saw Talk / My first try at stack cutting
« on: December 04, 2013, 08:16:57 pm »
Just finished my first 3 stack cuts. Quite a few bobbles and miss cuts but I am fairly happy with them. I am starting on my second stack, I have to make 10 of these for Christmas presents.
I still have to put the clear coat on them. I made the backing board out of cedar and the humming bird out of 1/8 " Baltic Birch.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Question about stack cutting
« on: November 28, 2013, 06:05:53 pm »
This is my first attempt at stack cutting. I am cutting three 1/8" Baltic Birch. The plywood seems to jumping or vibrating a lot while cutting. I taped all four edges real good to keep them from slipping, but was wondering if I should have used 2 sided tape in between the three pieces?

Any advice and help would be appreciated.

General Scroll Saw Talk / The Lord's Supper Pattern
« on: November 20, 2013, 05:42:36 pm »
I decided to try Steve's pattern for the Lord's Supper. I thought I might make 3 of them for my sisters for Christmas. After 2 hours and countless blade changes from one hole to another I got one Disciple done. WOW! what a pattern. Now I am thinking might be able to get 3 of them done by next Christmas!   ::)

So far I have done alright but was wondering if anyone else has done this pattern and about how many hours it will take?

Also I have a Craftsman 16" saw and I am not sure that I will be able to make all the cuts with it.
Any advice and info would sure be appreciated.

Thanks,
George

General Scroll Saw Talk / I need your advice
« on: November 12, 2013, 04:47:26 pm »
I want to make some Christmas presents with Steve's hummingbird pattern. It says use 1/8" for the pattern and 1/2' backer board.

I have never used anything that thin. What do I need to use for this?
I think Baltic Birch plywood?

What do you all recommend?

Thanks,
George

I would appreciate any info and advice. I am getting ready to start on some Christmas presents and need one to drill holes with.
Thanks,

Is 4 layers of 1/4 in Birch too much to cut at one time?
