General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: A big thank you to Sheila Landry
« on: February 23, 2015, 09:35:50 pm »
Thanks to Steve and Sheila, I stack cut 2 from 1/4 inch red oak and rather than a smaller cut out for the back I made the backing bigger like a picture frame that I stained a dark walnut. Waiting for the stain to dry to see how they will look. I know my 2 sons will appreciate those two, last night I tried a stack of three 1/4 in BB and they came out great. Those will go with my oldest son to give as gifts for retiring members of the Canadian forces he works with.  Again thanks.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Bandsaw
« on: February 23, 2015, 09:27:40 pm »
My bandsaw is getting to be a pain in the neck so I think it is time for a new one. I have looked at reviews of various saws and all seem to have the same type of reviews with some good and some saying never buy this one. Any recommendations?

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Pricing
« on: February 23, 2015, 09:24:01 pm »
I am lucky enough to attend our local farmers market every Saturday. I usually price my items to pay for materials plus a little. I get to meet people I haven't talked to in years, meet new people, and get rid of the surplus I don't give to family and friends. It is a hobby that has managed to pay for my 788 and ex21, with a few dollars still in the kitty to pay for more lumber in the future. I get to spent quiet time in the shop every day and the shelves have room on them, overall a win win in my opinion.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: How thick is too thick?
« on: February 01, 2015, 12:10:23 am »

"But I found that when I was getting to the right side after cutting the left side, that the right side started to move. I had to go back and tape it in place.. Any suggestions?  Anyone  ;)
( I wrapped clear tape around the boards before cutting )"
Rather than cutting one side completely off, then the other side, I drill a starter hole at one end and complete the cut as an inside cut. this keeps the stack from traveling as it is attached right to the end. I hope you get what I mean as the explanations doesn't look that great.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Hanging my work
« on: February 01, 2015, 12:03:28 am »
I found 1/4 screws instead of nails for the small hangers for my 1/4 and 1/2 inch thick wall plaques. they take some practice before it is easy to use them but hold well. I have found there are a variety of small hangers available that work on almost all my hanging projects.

They look good Matt, when I started with them, I cut 2 at one sitting, one out of pine the other from walnut and when I glued them I alternated the two woods, it added to the look and I sold them first time out for $10.00 each.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: selling items?
« on: January 18, 2015, 10:34:33 pm »
Don't be discourages because things don't sell the first time you attempt to attend a sale or fair. I have found it takes the right person to purchase an item. I attend a farmers market here weekly, I have seen things sit for 6 weeks with no interest then all of a sudden 3 people want that particular item and 2 more want to know if you have any more, other things disappear the first time you put them out.  I have seen as many as 200 people walk past some stop to admire the work and pass on a compliment but no buyers, then the next 4 people walk up and buy 2 or 3 items. I don't image there are too many millionaires as the result of working with a scroll saw, so keep it a hobby and hope it pays for your material. Above all have fun,

Pattern Requests. / Re: Pattern search

Thanks for the pics, I think I will use the one Clem had and burn it into the sign with raised letters it should look okay. The other looks more like a sparrow or chickadee.

I have spent upwards of 2 hours on google with very limited results. It seems a robin is not something anyone cuts. Lots of cardinals and eagles, I did find a clip art one that I am going to try and make a pattern from. Something I never did before, but I enjoy a new challenge.

Can anyone point me in to a link to a pattern for a robin? I have a request to make a deck sign and I have search all the sites I know about but haven't found a suitable robin. Thanks Tom

I looked at different ones on the internet and then free handed one, it is kind of rough but gave me some ideas to try, so over the next week I will try some different things and see what the results are. Thanks for the replies.

Pattern Requests. / Shawl Pins
« on: December 07, 2014, 09:57:52 am »
Does anyone have a pattern for shawl pins? Yesterday a lady that does sells knitting at the market asked me if I could make shawl pins, she is even willing to sell them for me. I never even heard of them until then. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Thank you
« on: December 06, 2014, 10:55:48 pm »
I don't post often but read all the new posts almost every day. I would like to thank first Steve for all the great daily patterns as well as the ones in his catalogue  and secondly all the posters here for their tips I have read over the past year. With all this help I managed to sell over $600 worth of items at the local farmers market in the past three Saturdays, and have had people request I come back for the next weeks leading up to Christmas. Thanks to all of you.
