General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Inlay in very thin wood
« on: September 14, 2019, 09:45:11 pm »
The internal lines on  the leaf and the grapes are saw  cuts I make with my scroll saw and then, after I glue the inlay in place, fill them with a mixture of white glue and sanding dust that I get from my  orbital sander.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Inlay in very thin wood
« on: September 11, 2019, 08:24:25 am »
I need to do some inlays into 3/16" thick wood and I did not want to change my saw table angle so I simply inlayed my usual 3/8" wood into the thinner wood.  I just pushed the thicker wood through until the back was flush and cut off and sanded the excess on the front.  These are three sliding tops for wine bottle boxes. only 3/16" thick.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Whats Happened ?

ALthough I come here every day I seldom respond to posts because about 90% of threads are about fretwork or patterns for fretwork.  I do not do fretwork.  I always read posts concerning what I am interested in:  Inlay and making toys.  I have found that this is true in all scroll saw forums.

I come to this forum and four others twice a day and agree this forum is pretty slow to have any changes.  Some of the other forums have the same problem.

I have a friend that also does scrolling and he finds out much of what he is interested in, by going to youtube videos.  Maybe this is an influence on attendance in forums like this one.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Hegner collected today
« on: February 19, 2018, 08:51:22 am »
Only difference I see is the voltage of the motor and no hold-down.  I understand the hold-down is only installed on saws to be exported to the USA.  I have removed mine.

Excellent saw.  Changing and connecting blades takes time to get used to.  I think it would be slow to do fretwork with.  A VERY durable saw!  I do all my inlay cutting with my Polymax-3 that I have used for hours, most every day since 2008.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Foot pedal
« on: February 16, 2018, 08:36:33 am »
The foot switch should be no problem.  I have a soft start, variable speed, Bosch router that I turn off and on using a remote switch.

Now a magnetic switch will not work using a foot switch.  I had to change out the magnetic switch on my Hegner to use a foot switch.

I prefer the "click on -click off" type foot switch.  I do not want to have to hold my foot on the switch all the while I am sawing.

I no longer use pallet wood but I did, years ago, when I was just starting woodworking.  My mistakes that were eventually burned cost me nothing but my time.  I found  exotic woods in some pallets.

I worked at a sheet metal shop and got their pallets and they were mostly 4"x 4"x  10' that the sheet steel came on, from asia.

Hi Dan;

Good advice already given here.  I make and sell a lot of my scroll saw work and find it is hard to sell anything that is ment to hang on the wall.  I do not do fretwork but have done lettering for signs and have done intarsia.
I find that making boxes with images inlaid into the hinged lids sells very well.  I have literally sold well over 2000 of them in the past 9 years.  After about a year of making these I could make a box with the inlay in about two hours.  I think fretwork would take longer and I know intarsia does.  Making pine toys also works well for me.  I sell enough of them to pay my space rent every time. (I now only do 18 shows each summer.)

Today I am working on making these same two inlays  but in cedar this time.
Instead of oak, I am using ash.

Diana Thompson's books have lots of ornament pattern ideas in them.  I have made nine different ornament/toys and some are directly from her books.  Cats . dogs, swans, dragons, angels, horses, giraffes, reindeer,  and have modified one horse to make it a unicorn.  All done using the compound cutting method using my scroll saw.
