General Scroll Saw Talk / Inlay in very thin wood
« on: September 11, 2019, 08:24:25 am »
I need to do some inlays into 3/16" thick wood and I did not want to change my saw table angle so I simply inlayed my usual 3/8" wood into the thinner wood.  I just pushed the thicker wood through until the back was flush and cut off and sanded the excess on the front.  These are three sliding tops for wine bottle boxes. only 3/16" thick.

Toy Makers / Compound cut Angel
« on: December 30, 2017, 04:22:26 pm »
I have been making a lot of compound cut figures using a pattern from Diana Thompson's book.  I altered the pattern a bit to make it more robust so it can be used as a toy.  Originally designed as an ornament.
The halo is a wooden toy wheel.3/4" drilled out a bit.  Total height is 4 1/4" made from a two by four.

I used an ornament pattern to make these toys.  I altered them a bit to beef them up and to turn a reindeer into a horse.  4" tall made from a 2x4.  Also made some Cross/fish nick-nacks. I have made  over 40 of these different items  now. Each takes about nine minutes, at the saw, to make.

I made this rather large box for a local university's Christmas event for local children.  The theme this year is "Mickey's Christmas.  This box measures 11.5" x 8.5" x 3" deep.  This will be their door prize at this event.

« on: October 20, 2017, 08:19:49 am »
Our woodworking club has been asked to make chairs for children by Ronald McDonald house here in Lubbock. They will have local artists decorate these chairs and then offer them for auction as a fund raiser. These are the first two. They want thirty of them. Two sizes. Made of 1/2” baltic birch plywood and are twenty inches tall. These are cut out using a jig saw and a scroll saw. Only twenty-eight more to make.

Toy Makers / Best sellers in toys.
« on: July 02, 2017, 05:26:22 pm »
Along with my boxes, with images and lettering inlaid into the hinged lids, I make and sell toys.  My best sellers are rubber band shooters.  Pistols and long guns. The sales of these always covers my space rent.  I made over two hundred of them for this year but I see by the past five Saturdays at the farmers market, that I will run out of them before the end of the season.  So, today I started in on making one hundred additional shooters.  Hope this gets me through the season. Sold a bunch of T-Rex toys also.

Brag Forum / Flower inlay on box lids with rounded corners.
« on: May 04, 2017, 09:09:45 am »
This cedar box is 8"x6"x2" and the inlay woods are: Bubinga Poplar, and Bois d'arc.  I made these while experimenting on how to make rounded corners on the box while still using only 3/8" wood.
Continuing to try new things, even after making and selling boxes for about nine years now.

Brag Forum / Using flawed cedar
« on: April 08, 2017, 08:39:44 am »
Some of my cedar I get has flaws in it and I have been working around them. I decided to use them as a feature of the product. Not a lot of scroll saw work but a nice project. I made eight of these nine inch long boxes.
