Ask Steve a question. / Login isn't permanent
« on: April 17, 2023, 08:59:14 am »
Lately I have to login each time I come to the site.  This happens each time I restart my computer - which is every day, even if I select the "forever" option on how long to stay logged in.  I am running Windows 10 Pro and Firefox, in case that helps.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The Coffee Shop / Cute sign
« on: April 28, 2019, 11:40:53 am »
Just spent a week in the hospital but all is OK now.  I saw this sign, the only non-serious sign in the place, and thought it was cute.  It would make a good cutting if someone made a pattern from it.  A gift for your favorite medical person?

Enjoy,
Jim

The Coffee Shop / Ain't it the truth
« on: November 20, 2018, 06:33:00 pm »
By today's standards none of us were supposed to ever make it.

Scenario 1:

Jack goes duck hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack.

1957 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.

2017- School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.

Scenario 2:

Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.

1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.

2017 - Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled, even though Johnny started it.

Scenario 3:

Jeffrey will not be still in class; he disrupts other students.

1957 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.

2017 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The family gets extra money (SSI) from the government because Jeffrey has a disability.

Scenario 4:

Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.

1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman.

2017 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse, Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers being spanked herself, and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist.

Scenario 5:

Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.

1957 - Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock.

2017 - The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons.

Scenario 6:

Pedro fails high school English.

1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college.

2017 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English is then banned from core curriculum. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario 7:

Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.

1957 - Ants die.

2017 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The FBI investigates his parents - and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

Scenario 8:

Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.

1957–In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.

2017- Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.

This should hit every email in-box to show just how stupid we have become!

The Coffee Shop / My thoughts exactly
« on: October 26, 2018, 11:02:23 pm »
I am 80 years old and love to fish.

I was sitting in my boat the other day when I heard a voice say, "Pick me up."

I looked around but couldn't see any one.

I thought I was dreaming when I heard the voice say again, "Pick me up."

I looked in the water and there, floating on the top, was a frog.

So I said, "Are you talking to me?"

The frog said, "Yes, I'm talking to you. Pick me up, then kiss me and I' ll turn into the most beautiful woman you have ever seen. I'll make sure that all your friends are envious and jealous because I will be your bride!"

I took a look at the frog for a short time, reached over, picked her up carefully, and placed her in my front breast pocket.

Then the frog said, "What, are you nuts? Didn't you hear what I just said? I said kiss me and I will be your beautiful bride."

I opened my pocket, looked at the frog and said,

"Nah, at my age I'd rather have a talking frog."

The Coffee Shop / Doctor advises pregnant women to walk every day
« on: January 19, 2018, 04:13:03 pm »
The room was full of pregnant women with their husbands.

The instructor said, "Ladies, remember that exercise is good for you. Walking is especially beneficial. It strengthens the pelvic muscles and will make delivery that much easier. Just pace yourself, make plenty of stops and try to stay on a soft surface, like grass or a path.”

"Gentlemen, remember -- you're in this together. It wouldn't hurt you to go walking with her. In fact, that shared experience would be good for you both.”

The room suddenly became very quiet as the men absorbed this information.

After a few moments a man at the back of the room slowly raised his hand.

"Yes?" said the Instructor.

"I was just wondering if it would be all right if she carries a golf bag while we walk?"

This level of sensitivity can't be taught.

The Coffee Shop / But Dust
« on: December 29, 2017, 01:34:06 pm »
A visiting minister during the offertory prayer:

"Dear Lord," he began with arms extended and a rapturous look on his upturned face, "without you we are but dust..."

He would have continued, but at that moment one very obedient little girl (who was listening carefully for a change) leaned over to her mother and asked quite audibly in her shrill little girl voice:

"Mommy, WHAT is butt dust?"

Out of the mouths of babes.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Thumb screw fix?
« on: December 03, 2017, 10:24:46 am »
The thumb screws on my Delta 40-690, the DW-788 clone, need some help.  The rotating part (anvil?) that contacts the blade doesn't rotate as easily as it should.  Can it be fixed?

Can I remove the anvil? How?  It it comes off, do I clean it and then lube it with a tiny drop of sewing machine oil or . . .?

Is ti enough to squirt some WD-40 into the gap between the screw and the anvil and work the anvil around?

I will appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks,
Jim

Was browsing the coffee shop part of the forum and found that this post http://www.stevedgood.com/community/index.php?topic=20250.0 with the subject line "Safety Suggestion" had the fewest views of any post.

Curious.

The Coffee Shop / Safety suggestion
« on: November 01, 2017, 09:43:44 am »
Once again, the clocks change (most places) on Sunday.

If they are not operated occasionally, the circuit breakers in your electrical panel could "freeze" and not break the circuit when needed.  Because you will have to reset your clocks, this will be a good time to flip all the circuit breakers (off and back on) to make sure they are working properly.  If the breaker doesn't "snap" open and closed, it would be a good idea to have them checked as they springs inside can get old.

Don't forget to trip the big incoming breaker, usually at the top of the panel.  And don't forget to turn them back on.   ;D ;D

If you have fuses, it would be wise to remove and reinstall each one to make sure they aren't stuck.

Have a good weekend.

Pattern Requests. / Pattern from silhouette
« on: October 20, 2017, 11:37:29 pm »
I have a silhouette of a saxophone where the instrument is solid black.  I want to make a pattern of the saxophone in the style Steve Good makes - a fine solid black outline with the interior shaded a light grey.  I followed reply #13 from http://www.stevedgood.com/community/index.php?topic=13355.0.  The resulting trace was rough - not a smooth line but instead was very jagged.  The line was about 1/8" wide.

Obviously I'm doing something wrong.  Any suggestions on how to get better results would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

General Scroll Saw Talk / Steve's pattern June 11 - safety suggestion
« on: June 11, 2017, 09:45:09 am »
Steve's pattern had an excellent safety suggestion about resawing on the table saw, one that I hadn't thought of.  http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.ca/

He warned that, when you have to flip the board make the second cut, you should put a shim on the kerf to prevent  kick-back.  Makes sense - I've done this without the shim but will not do it anymore.

Thanks Steve.
