General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Foot switch
« on: November 21, 2016, 07:08:39 am »
I do not have the dead man type switch, on my 14"saw, I have the switch mounted on the stand so I can turn it on and off with my knee.  This is good because my saw is on castors.  On my 20" saw which has no castors the switch is in the middle between my feet.  On my larger saw, because of the electrical wiring, I can not turn the saw on with the switch, but I can turn it off with the switch.   dan in Pa

Too bad there were a couple of voids in the Baltic ply, causing a couple of small pieces missing on the back.

So I got the pieces all cut and cleaned up.  I lightly sanded the backs to remove the fuzzies and just make it nicer.  My next question is would it be ok to spray the project with polyurethane to protect the bond between the photo and wood, and just protect the whole puzzle,  and make the back and edges nicer?  thanks for any replies,  dan in Pa

General Scroll Saw Talk / Steve Good Puzzle Download
« on: November 18, 2016, 06:11:56 pm »
So I bought the Steve Good puzzle download,  I started making my first 5x7 35 piece,  I cut the 5 long rows,  my question is, how do I cut the short rows without the thing falling apart?  since there is nothing holding the pieces together besides the edge pieces are taped.  I was wondering if I should tape the rows together again before I cut cutting the short rows?   thanks for any help    dan in Pa

Ask Steve a question. / Pattern question
« on: August 14, 2016, 06:18:33 pm »
Hi Steve, I have a question about your nativity pattern,  the older one "Mantle Nativity Display"  the pattern I printed out the measurements for the roof and the sides are listed on the pattern, but the printed pattern is slightly smaller.  Could I have made a mistake printing or are the measurements just nominal?  I am making one of these for a Christmas gift.   Thanks for any help.   dan in Pa

On my Poly Max saw, the foot switch will turn the saw off but not on, works for 1/2 of the process, better 1/2 than nothing at all, and on my 14" Hegner which is on wheels/castors, (like most of my machines and work benches, because of limited space, and I can wheel them around and out to the drive way) that I have heavily  modified by using a jack shaft and different motor and pulley and belt, I have the the foot switch zip tied to the stand, and use my knee to turn the saw on and off, so I guess I could call it a knee switch.  I like using the foot switch and it could be used on different machines. Or maybe  a safety switch like on a table saw.  dan in Pa

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Blade size recommendation

Hi, thanks for the replies, I wanted to add that I do use blue tape for easier pattern removal, and wonder if this helps or is it still a good idea to use packing tape? Also I am in no hurry to make cuts. I would sooner make a nice job even if it takes much longer.  dan in Pa

General Scroll Saw Talk / Blade size recommendation
« on: August 27, 2015, 08:28:48 pm »
Hi, I am making a puzzle using 3/4" hard maple.  I like to use FDUR, the cut is very smooth.  What size blade would be good?  3 other questions, if i run the saw on a slower speed would it be easier to stay on the line?  will the wood want to burn on a slower speed ( I can change the blade often)?  Would packing tape on top of the pattern have any advantage?  Thanks for any help.  dan in Pa

Get togethers, shows and swap meets / Re: May 8-9 show.
« on: March 03, 2015, 11:55:54 pm »
Hi, I wanted to go both days, but I may only make it for one because of work.  It is about 100 miles for me.  This will be my first wood working show, I never got to watch someone use a scroll saw, I learned on my own and by watching on the computer, so I am really looking forward to being there.  I just wish there were more classes on scroll saw work instead of so much wood carving.  Also I like old farm machinery and steam machinery so it should be a good time.  dan in Pa

Intarsia / Re: wood
« on: August 27, 2014, 02:09:26 pm »
Hi, I hope it ok to post here instead of starting a new topic, my question is,,,doing intarsia, how do I finish wood?  spray polyurethane?  the reason I am asking is another question,,,,if wood if finished "NATURAL" will the color change?  the reason I am asking is because I got some different species of wood including blue pine, I got this wood form what I thought was a very good supplier.  Anyways the blue pine is not very blue.  I just wondered if it would change color when finished.

Also another question, I have some thin wood, I believe it is cherry wood,  It is a board about 6" x  6', it is cupped a little.  Any suggestions how to make it flat again?  thanks for any advice.   dan in PA
